Ulog #040 : Lagundi as a Bronchodilator and for other Respiratory Problems

in #ulog6 years ago (edited)

In the Philippines, to get sick is not allowed.

For my mom's massive hospital bill, totaling to almost half a million Philippine pesos, with her medication expenses amounting to PHP 200k, something changed in our household. At the moment, a $10 grand will be difficult to get hold of, so we were left to make a drastic change if we don't want to spend another amount. Not that it will warrant getting the same sickness like my mom. With everyone tired and in the middle of rainy season, sniffles and simple cough can just be a precursor to something nastier.

Prevention is better than a cure, enter the ever reliable LAGUNDI

It's a common remedy since we were growing up that whenever we kids have a cough, brewing some Lagundi leaves and branches was easy as a pie. Go to the backyard and brew some. With a bit of unpleasant taste, ìt's not favored as much. But if we want to get better, drinking it was the only option.

As an adult, the taste is like a typical tea with no milk or sugar. Perhaps a little bit of honey can fix it?

Ready to be brewed.

A bit of a background about my mom, she developed a difficulty of breathing when she was unable to expectorate her nasty phlegms due to her stroke. This admission prompted intubation to easily manage her symptoms, it warranted 4 times admission to the intensive care for more than a month. Managing her right now at home, she have her own oxygen tanks, suction and nebulizer machines plus her medicines as needed.

What do science says of Lagundi?

In an article here about Lagundi:

It is generally used for the treatment of coughs, asthma symptoms, and other respiratory problems.

The same article specified the Lagundi extracts to contain bronchodilator properties, this is what asthmatic patients need when having an attack.

Inhalers, nebulizers contain bronchodilators as they dilate or widen our airways. Wheezes heard are the airways or bronchioles of our lungs getting narrower, making it difficult to breathe.

I only used 1 article so perhaps anyone wanting to know more can do further research on it.

The Lagundi brew

Knowing its' benefits, of course the adults in the house are drinking it, especially for my mom. Its' bitter taste can be remedied with a bit of honey, if not sugar. My mom being NG fed, i am giving her some in between her meals. She can't taste it so she can have more. Perhaps her immobility is making her cough on and off, plus her naso-gastric tube in-situ.

I am not so sure if there are already lagundi tablets in the market here in the Philippines as it is very much encouraged by the Department of Health. It is used in our town, straight from the tree or shrubs.

Prevention is way better than cure?

Absolument!

I am a nurse, not a doctor. Please do more research if need be. All images are mine, taken with my Samsung Galaxy S7.

This is great, and I wouldve missed it if it wasn't for nM and you making the recent curation. love the jar too, i hope this nm is working! how does it taste? :)

Tasted like a strong tea with no milk nor sugar. So a bit of honey and it's god cuppa.
Have you come across this tree? Apparently it's a variety of a chaste tree.

no never have but i look forward to trying some 😁😈

Am thinking of making tea leaves out of it...but we don't have any in the backyard. Will check if i can plant some. The ones we have are along the roadside for anyone. It's running out.

no kidding that would be super awesome!! what? heck yah!
roadside, maybe not so good? roadside here has roadkill LOL

Am in the countryside...all we have here are goats and cows on their way to their meals. Even they hate lagundi ahahaha

The only roadkill you can see are frogs which is rare..and we're far from motorways.

I can dry some leaves plus the branches too can be brewed, nothing wasted except the dead ones. The leaves are probably more bitter when dried.

Very effective for cough and pure herbal! Thanks to your post maam.

Sure is! You're welcome☺

Thank you. To make a project on natural medicine has always been my plan for months as we got loads of herbal meds here in the Philippines. Thank you for this, it reminded me of it.

Don't forget the silver...

Here's one helpful article... except, ignore the misinformation about ionic silver.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. Purely my personal opinion. Consult your physician.

😄😇😄

@creatr

My mom's h20 is distilled with silver ions.
Let me read that. Can my physician explain ionic silver, you think?🤣🤣🤣 Thanks @creatr

Interesting.

There's loads of herbal stuff here..fresh from each other's backyards.

Sounds great! :D

Can be used via nebulisations? Great, my mom's cough is on and off with phlegm..am doing suctioning on her.

If you do, please start with caution, a little at a time.

Are you aware of the Herxheimer reaction?

My mom can't speak post stroke so i need to be wary of that. Thanks.Noted @creatr

Does it only grow in the Philippines? I wonder if we can get it in the states? Thanks. Very helpful

It's tropical..perhaps small cuttings can travel to there. Usually it's from India too, so any individual from the Philippines and India could have successfully have them grown in California and Hawaii.
I brought some moringa cuttings before in uk but they didn't make it. Lagundi have more chance there.

I never heared of Lagundi. In combination with honey you have a powerful @naturalmedicine for boosting yiur immunesystem. I wish you and your mom all the best. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, i totally forgot the benefits of honey.
Let me check the other names for it as i read it's only from the Philippines and India, considering there's loads of these nationalities in california and hawaii, there might just be there too.
Cheers.

It's the chaste tree! That one I know. Thank you! Many blessings to you!

And you! I hope there's only one chaste tree😊

Thanks to your post maam, very informative!

You're welcome.

I have actually discovered a great way to take Lagundi :) Just add some kalamansi and a pinch of cinnamon and honey and it makes a really wonderful tasting tea :) You can use sugar if you don't have honey. The cinnamon makes a big difference

Yeah we use cinnamon kuya☺
