Hello fellow Steemians. I'm here again Rigel. Let's discuss the context of my book named psychiatric nursing. Today let's talk about mental illness . First let's talk about how many people are experiencing ill? One in 10 people in the United States have some form of mental illness, ranging from mild to severe, that would benefit from professional help. Twenty-one million families are affected by mental illness from someone in their immediate family-more than one in four.
Children also suffer from mental illness in the same proportion as adult; 3 percent have severe emotional problems; another 8 percent have less severe problems, but are still unable to function normally.
WHERE ARE THEY TREATED?
- outpatient clinics. Most people seeking treatment for mental illness go to the outpatient clinics of some kind. Community mental health centers (CMHCs), the newest concept in mental health care, are available to almost one quarter of the Nation. CMHCs serve people in thier own communities, who plan and run them. Federal, state and local governments contribute to the support of the centers. In order to receive the funding, CMHCs, must offer inpatient services , and consultation and education to the community.
WHO TREATS THEM?
In 1972 there were 128,937 staffed positions in mental health facilities. Of these 287,502 were psychiatrist ,psychologists, social workers, nurses, and mental health technicians who are with patient services. A 1971 study by the American Psychiatric Association showed there were almost 24,000 psychiatrists in the U.S , 16,267 of them practicing. hey spent about 43 percent of their time in private office practice and 18 percent in inpatient services. Ten percent of all practicing psychiatrist (1,0340 are child psychiatrist. Nationally, there are 11 psychiatrists for very 100,000 people; However , these professionals are unevenly distributed across the U.S ,for instance, more than half of them are located in five states: New York, Pennyslvania, Massachusetts, Illnois, and , California. The south Midwest, and Mountain States have the fewest psychiatrists per 100,000 population.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The cost of mental illness to the country is tremendous and was estimated in 1968 to be in $21 billion. This figure includes the cost of direct services paid by individuals, as well as by government and private insurance carriers, research and manpower programs and vocational rehabilitation . Sixteen billion of this loss is in productive capacity (how much one is capable of producing), such as the potential earnings of non-working mentally ill, absenteeism, unemployment, and loss in purchasing power. It does not include the intangible costs, such as personal misery to individuals, their family and friends accidents and crime.
The average cost of private psychiatric session ( usually 50 minutes) is $33.00. The average daily maintenance expenditure per resident in state and country hospitals in 1970 was $14.89. The average expense per patient in general hospital for all illness was$81.00 in 1970 and in private psychiatric hospitals, $47.63. CMHCs are required by law to offer services to anyone in their communities regardless of their ability to pay. State and country hospital also offer services to patient regardless of their ability to pay. Some private insurance coverage is available for psychiatric services. About 67 percent of the population has some for inpatient services and 43 percent for outpatient services.
