Took A Much Needed Break - I'm Back Again!

in #ulog2 months ago

What's Going On.

So I've been away for awhile. There really wasn't any specific reason. I didn't get disgusted with Hive, or discouraged by its price fluctuations. It was actually a combination of several things, none of which concerned Hive.

Said nobody ever.

It started with my Twitter break. God, I'm so happy I did that. After deactivating my Twitter account, I felt so good I decided maybe I'd do an internet free summer. Well, not exactly internet free, I'm not a troglodyte. Lets call it social media free. The only time I really went online this summer was to place a trade, check a news feed, or look at the live crypto prices. With a couple forays into Reddit's dual-sport, and crypto communities.

I have to admit, it felt really good. I'm actually contemplating if I want to carry on with this social media free lifestyle. It just feels better.

Why I Took The Break?

It started with the constant barrage of political propaganda in my Twitter feed. No matter what I did, I just couldn't get rid of it. Then without a Twitter blue check it seemed like posts weren't being seen and I wasn't really getting any engagement. Honestly, it seemed like I had been talking to the same 5 to 10 people regularly for the last couple years. I had close to 50K followers yet I regularly talked to about 10 people. Seriously, that's strange.

It took about a month to get used to not Tweeting. Often I would find myself reaching for my phone ready to Tweet something out, only to remember I was giving it up. So after a few weeks of this, and breaking the Twitter (I'm not going to call it an addicition, it was a habit.) habit, I decided to maybe give up all of it.

It Made Me Feel Icky...

So, Hive never made me feel icky. But the rest of social media really did. After giving up Twitter I decided to cut out anything that made feel icky for lack of a better word. Not depressed, not sad, just plain icky. I stopped with the news, newspapers, conspiracy sites, and unfortunately, Hive just got left behind because I was rarely on the computer.

The bottom line was I needed a break. I was tired of constantly talking about politics and political issues. I realized it dominated a huge chunk of my conversations IRL. After giving up social media, and news media, I was forced to find new subjects to talk about. Like the old days, when we talked about normal things, like work, cars, motorcycles, and mostly fun stuff that happened throughout our day.

After a summer of giving up "Media" in general, I really contemplated whether or not I missed blogging. Short answer, I did a little. I missed Hive...

If I'm being truthful, I really didn't have a lot to blog about over the summer either. I spent the majority of my weekends, (when I usually travel) to sourcing resell items for eBay. Outside of that, I didn't have a lot of exciting, or positive things to blog about.

A family member also fell ill. So I've been spending a nice part of my week at hospitals and medical centers. The only thing I really accomplished was getting the DR650 in order. Next season, I'm changing around the gearing a bit with a new chain and sprockets and hopefully, I'll be able to get a couple trips under my belt.

The DR with some new tires.

With all that said, I discovered the joys of Reddit. It has become a great source of cryptocurrency and Suzuki DR650 information. Reddit has become everything Twitter used to be for me. Good information on the crypto space and great way to engage with the community.

I also recently started a Bluesky account. @thedudetravels.bsky.social

I'm looking for fun accounts to follow so if you're on Bluesky, please follow and DM and let me know you're a fellow Hiver. I'll be using Bluesky to promote Hive and some of the other projects I'm working on. I.e.; The travel site, reselling. I just wanted an alternative social media account to promote stuff on. So long X/Twitter! Never going back to that dumpster fire.

I'm going to try and get back to regular Hive blogging. I'll be posting at least a couple times a week. I even slacked a little on my Hive voting, something I've always done consistently. So, I need to get back in the swing of things.

Anyway, that's what's up with me. Hope you all are fine and well. Hope you had an awesome summer. Looking forward to getting back to Hive. Upcoming topics should be, could be, current state of US politics, reselling, autumn, motorcycle riding, and motorcycle repair.

Ahahah I enjoyed this part! 😊
I agree with you, sometimes it's good to free yourself from social media (but not Hive!!) 😝

I actually felt a little guilty not posting here all summer :(

It sounds like you had a nice healthy reset.

It Made Me Feel Icky...

The world has gotten more connected and more chaotic and pulling away from the intensity of it all is a good thing. I think we all need a refresh and some perspective on life every once in a while. Especially these days.

Knowing when and where we want to invest our time into in the days of constant connectivity and always on 24/7 access can be challenging. One thing I've done lately is to focus on "owned" content and destinations vs. "shared" social media. I'm retaining my brain to go to my website/blogs, newsletter, Hive BEFORE I go to traditional social media. This is week two of this new habit and it's getting easier. Those first few days were a real challenge. Reaching for my phone to check X or FB or LinkedIn to see what I had missed only to remind myself I could only go to those places AFTER I had created content or worked on my own online properties. It's been good to develop some new healthier digital habits.

Sending best wishes. Cheers!

No doubt, it gets a little much, the constant barrage of information over-load.

That's a great strategy. Pretty much how I'm going to be handling my social media strategy these days.

Sending best wishes. Cheers!

Good to hear from you, thanks for the awesome comment!

Hey! That's two of my old Hive friends came back from a break this week and it's good to see you both. I do get that people need a break, but I find it hard to totally stop. I did kill my Twtr account and don't really miss it. I do use Mastodon, but I'm not joining anything else for now, so won't be joining Bluesky.

I really wish some reddit communities could migrate to Hive. There is some talk of that for @dashpay. I don't really use reddit as there just isn't time.

Cheers and !BEER

I'd love to see a Reddit style interface for Hive, that would be awesome.

For me it's all about information. I just wasn't getting it from Twitter anymore. Not to mention engagement. The break felt great. Probably done with most social media from here on out.

Good to hear from you brother!

Hive communities are something like reddit. It's mainly about getting like-minded people together and then cool stuff happens. Not sure how many bikers we have here.

I've met a few. Not a huge community on here though.
