Painting Ricefields

It seems that the global pandemic caused by Covid-19 hits us all. A lot of activities has been restricted and most of us are forced to stay at home for a long time. It’s been awhile since I had my great adventure and obviously a lot of that happened before the quarantine period. As I was pondering on all of this, I can’t help but reminisce all the fun while travelling and enjoying the wonderful breeze that nature gives. As I was on the edge of losing ideas on what to write because I haven’t had that much of the adventure lately, I had an idea to have a little bit of throwback on my life before the pandemic. So most of my content here on are about throwbacks but I will still share current adventures if I had one and if it is worth sharing. So the first chapter that I will share and is one of my unexpected / spontaneous adventure that happened was way back last July of 2019.

You see, I can tell that for me, I have the best job in the world. They say, “If you love your work, you don’t have to work a single day of your life”. And YES! I have been literally living that every day or at least for the most part of my week. Just an introduction, I am a Civil Engineer working in Cebu Provincial Government and my job is to provide water on areas of Cebu Province that doesn’t have access to clean water. Quite inspiring but this job takes a lot of walking or hiking, not in mountain peaks but in search for springs and rivers. Lucky for me because it is my passion. I’ve been doing mountain hiking and river trekking before I worked in Cebu Province but now, I am paid while doing the hobby that I want.

So back to July 2019. It was a very hot day. We and my colleagues or team (we must be in teams when we conduct surveys) were on our way to a small mountain barangay in Pinamungajan. The barangay experienced scarcity of water so the LGU requested us to conduct a feasibility study to supply adequate amount of water to people living in that area. Together with the local guides and LGU officials, we arrived in the place and we did a small hike towards the water source.

The potential water source is a spring. When I saw the spring, I felt in awe on how beautiful it was. The spring is surrounded by marshland with beautiful flowers and green grass. It was more like a paradise. And it produced a lot of water that it was used to supply water to some barangays, used as irrigation for their plants and agricultural lands. It even had a swimming pool near the spring and this is famous across the town. But the problem is, how can we bring this water to higher areas? Since that barangay concerned was located in an elevation higher than the spring. So we surveyed the whole area. We gathered data on the topography, the household and all the numbers needed in order for us to analyse and design the water system that can supply adequate water to the barangay.

As we surveyed the area, we came across a very vast rice field. It was my first time seeing it. The ones that we usually see on our textbooks and postcards is very real that time. The experience was surreal. For me, it was the climax of the whole trip. The scenery may be simple but it captured my heart. It was like some beautiful painting that we always see growing up and at that moment, it felt so nostalgic that I was standing in front of the beautiful scenery.

For me it was one of the most spontaneous adventure that I had experienced. It is very spontaneous in the sense that I never expected to see the view and scenery that place offered. Most of us would usually go to famous tourist sites when we travel to a place. But for me, it felt much more exciting and satisfying when you bump into a place which is simple, infamous and undiscovered in mainstream media. There is much more peace, serenity, and calmness.
