In September, 2021, I moved from a suburb of Kansas City back to my hometown of Topeka, KS. After working in IT for 9 years and experiencing migraines more frequently each month, I figured it was time to try something new. I began training for a factory position in October, 2021.
Around the middle of January, 2022, a few of my training classmates fell ill. All of them tested positive for Covid-19. I also felt ill, having the same symptoms as the others. After 3 Covid tests, a mono test, and a ton of blood work I was told what I didn’t have. I was let go after missing 5 weeks of work. The fatigue and upset stomach lasted an additional 7 weeks and still returns occasionally, making it difficult to search for another job.
On one of my better nights, I learned about a project called “Blockbuster DAO.” I started doing research on the project, finding out their goal is to raise enough money to purchase Blockbuster from Dish. Part of their plan is breathing life back into Blockbuster by transitioning it into the metaverse.
While researching Blockbuster DAO I noticed they were hosting a free online movie night. I reserved my ticket through a site called Beem which also hosted the movie night. The Beem experience was intriguing. It allowed us to chat with members of Blockbuster DAO, the creator of the film we were viewing, a few of the cast members, and members of the Beem team, all while watching the film. The film playing was “Flinch” (Read my review here)
We learned that the writer/director, Cameron Van Hoy, had a vision to turn Flinch into a web3 film franchise. With goals to make a Flinch part 2 and 3. We were told the franchise would be made up of people from their Discord community. Writers, actors, etc. could possibly be discovered by submitting samples of their work on the Flinch Discord server.
In this series of blogs I plan to share my journey from unemployment to…I’ve left the “to…” blank since I’m not sure where this journey will end. As someone who has always dreamed of being involved in film production, could this be my big break? Could the “to…” in this blog series become “to writer” or “to associate producer/producer” or even “to actor”? We shall see, hopefully soon.
That must have been a memorable experience.
For every movie I watch, I always wished I had the opportunity to discuss with one of the cast much more the writer/director
