RE: WHAT!?!?! You Want to Educate YOUR OWN CHILD!?!?!? *GASP*! (Navigating Unschooling in Japan)

It's all messed up. Seriously. Fucking. Messed. Up.

I was largely home/unschooled, mostly in Europe — and it was certainly a hassle for my parents even in the 1960's and 1970's. And the judgment from their peers was often the weirdest shit (according to my mom, many years later) like "Aren't you worried he won't be able to read and write, and do math?"

It's that attitude that often makes me roll my eyes... it's like there's this public perception that NOT sending your kid to a public school somehow = "raised by wolves."

Now, I'm not sure schools were ever places of learning; perhaps they were alwaysa sort of glorified babysitting service. I don't know.

i agree with everything you said! the schooling today is a conspiracy. they get the kids really really early so they can brainwash the shit out them, use them later as mindless drones and taxable income while being happy watching american idol...

My sister home schooled both of here children and they are both highly intelligent and loving caring parents with kids of their own. My nephew started his own business and is very successful. My niece landed a high paying job with the airlines and is making big bucks. A lot more charter schools are popping up now here on the Island and are using alternative methods for teaching their students. They seem to be much better than the public schools.

well-said! it's really so!
school is considered to be like the only possible way of studying, and people are just shocked when they hear about unschooling. They compare it with jungle upbringing when a kid will be limited in knowledge and skills.
