I am an avid history buff, so for my first Steemit post I am going to share with you all some fascinating facts about Franklin D. Roosevelt. Consider the following:
- He was an avid stamp collector.
For his entire life, Franklin D. Roosevelt loved stamp collecting. He would even have the treasury department send letters over so he could look at the stamps. He even said it helped him get through when he was bedridden with polio in the 1920's.
- He was related to his wife.
When he married Eleanor Roosevelt, he was marrying his fifth cousin once removed. She also was the niece of another distant relative of FDR, that of Teddy Roosevelt.
- FDR first attempted to gain national office in 1920, and it didn't turn out well.
In 1920, he was the vice presidential nominee of James M. Cox, but they lost by a substantial margin to Warren G. Harding.
- FDR was the first president to appoint a woman to a cabinet post.
He appointed Frances Perkins as Labor Secretary in 1933.
- FDR is the longest serving president.
Roosevelt was elected for four terms, and it is likely no one will defeat that record simply because a law was passed after he left that stipulated a president could only be elected to two terms.
