The 1UP project has formed in an attempt to reward and direct relevant contributions to the Utopian ecosystem while taking advantage of the high @utopian-io bot upvotes in order to create profitable curation rewards for the 1UP contributors. In this report I am presenting the new direction 1UP is taking in order to grow and make this tool something truely valuable for everyone.

Status Quo
First I would like to thank all 1UP sponsors for trusting my subjective selection and trailing the @utopian-1up account on SteemAuto. With your help we have already created a difference for many quality Utopians out there. I am trying to improve the profitability for you over time but this requires a learning curve. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
- The 1UP trail of @utopian-1up has grown to 23 followers
- The current value of a 100% trail upvote is about
$8 - Multiple 1UP's have been given daily for over a week now
- The first received curation rewards vary from great to marginal
- The 1UP comment has now a disclaimer for no affiliation to Utopian.io
- The comment graphic is now smaller and floats next to the text
- The general receiption of 1UP is great with lot of positive feedback
The 1UP Report
Writing a daily review of the upvoted posts and calculate the upvoted value manually has been taking way more time than I had planned for. Hence I decided to give up that idea for now and wait until we have developed an automated system. The idea of the report for now is rather to keep you posted on the development of the 1UP project itself which requires less frequent updates.
Voting of 1UP
Using exactly 10% overall voting power every day is very unpractical. Sometimes there are more posts that deserve a 1UP and sometimes less. Calculating that beforehand with varying vote values is impossible. My new strategy is therefor to either upvote as early as possible on very promising posts for highest rewards, even if there wasn't a moderator approval yet. Since I am a MOD myself I can usually judge if a post will be approved after all or not. On the other hand we have the hidden gems of less known authors which can be upvoted much later and still be profitable.
Of course profitability is not all and posts that deserve more will get 1UP's nevertheless. So if there is a trending post with a great contribution and 1UP has not yet upvoted it, I might do it if I feel it deserves so. Usually though, I think a trending post doesn't need a 1UP anymore because they are meant to help make a post trending in the first place.

1UP as a Bounty System
I have thought a lot about what 1Up is and what 1UP could become. The principal of curation trails is a fundamental feature of Steem even if never intended as such since it centralizes the Proof-of-Brain from X people to One. I think this can be a good thing if you use the trail to push things forward and create value for the authors, the curators following the trail and the Steem community in general.
Utopian.io as it is right now does have different priorities for open source categories like development, graphics and tutorials. and clever algorithms to decide who deserves what percentage of the daily Utopian pool. But it doesn't make a difference between a Steem development or other open source projects. It also doesn't make a difference between a popular project like WordPress and a small repository of solo developer. This is great because it distributes the reward pretty evenly and in a way favors the open source idea brilliantly.
However, pushing certain ideas and topics through Utopian is difficult in that environment. Here comes 1UP as a great addition to the system by creating bounties for important developments to help the Steem ecosystem grow and flower. In the end this is what Utopian means to me personally: A birth place for new Steem applications that will make Steemit, Busy, Utopian, eSteem, DTube and all the other projects more approachable for the masses.

1UP continues as it is but offers now 100% upvote bounties for merged pull requests. That means your contribution must be merged with the official project BEFORE you post them on Utopian.io. Please contact me for that on Discord. Each bounty can only be claimed once. The 1UP ideas for @steem-plus need a private talk with stoodkev.
