Hey Steemians!
So what else is there to do on this Caribbean island besides go to the beach? If you love nature, you will find plenty of fun activities to keep you occupied. We stayed in Soufriere, a small village at the southwestern edge of the island. It is the perfect central location as you have an amazing view of the Pitons (the postcard twin mountain peaks) and you are close to many different attractions. One of my favorites was the hot springs.
*Sulfur Springs--This has to be one of the coolest attractions because it is literally a drive in volcano. Now this volcano isnt like your typical volcano that you learn about, with the spewing lava. It exploded and collapsed in on itself long ago, so its more like a caldera. But it is still active and definitely worth venturing to for a natural spa experience! You will know that you are in the volcano because you will smell the sulfur.
**Fun fact--If there is a sulfur smell, that is a good thing as that means that there isnt a high level of toxic gases. If you dont smell sulfur in the air, than that means that there is more toxic gases than what is safe to breathe.
The highlight of Sulphur Springs is the hot springs and mud baths. These hot springs are naturally heated mineral waters that flow through the volcano. It is a soothing experience to soak in the tub before the fun part--playing in the mud!
The volcano releases mud instead of lava and it is this same mud (cooled down of course) that you will use at the baths. This healing mud is excellent for detoxifying the skin. You slather it on and sit in the sun to dry for about 10 minutes. Not only does it clean the pores and soothe bug bites, but it also leaves your skin super soft and conditioned after rinsing off.
After your spa experience, head over for a walking tour of the volcanic area up close. You will be led by a guide who will provide you with the history of the volcano and other fun facts like how locals used to venture into the area and cook eggs and chicken in the boiling mud for fun!
Tips:
--Wear black swimwear or old swimwear that you dont care about because the mud stains!
---Go early before 10 am and you will mostly have the mud and hot springs to yourself. When you arrive, do the baths FIRST and then do the tour afterward. After 10:30 am, droves of people from the cruise boat tours will start crowding up the baths and it will not be a pleasant experience.
what a nice experience!!! thank you for the tips :)
