What does it matter, how it kills you, it kills you and it is very preventable. Why even take that risk? And yes, you can die in the West from Measles. Here are some less common effects of measles:
-A febrile fit (convulsion) occurs in about 1 in 200 cases. This can be alarming, but full recovery is usual.
-Brain inflammation (encephalitis). This is a rare but very serious complication. It occurs in about 1 in 5,000 cases. It typically causes drowsiness, headache and being sick (vomiting) which start about 7-10 days after the onset of the rash. Encephalitis may cause brain damage. Some children die from this complication.
-Liver infection (hepatitis).
-Pneumonia. This is a serious complication that sometimes develops. Typical symptoms include fast or difficult breathing, chest pains and generally becoming more ill.
-Squint is more common in children who have had measles. The virus may affect the nerve or muscles to the eye.
Sure these are not as likely, but still possible.
Some People would rather take the risk and go the old school method like my mother did for all of us, which was the normal, instead of the possible risk through Vaccinations. We were never vaccinated and had all developing childhood diseases. Some studies point out that other incuarable long lasting diseases being cured after having childhood diseases and the fact that people were normally healthier through adult hood those that had measles, chickenpox ect. It should always be a choice.
A choice, sure, but strongly discouraged. And we must base the dession on sound science, not what some washed up ex-polotician says just to try to remain relavent.
Of course people should have a choice! I don't even think there should be rules to wear seat belts as I am playing with my own life and wellbeing! I'm always one for our right to do whatever we want as long as we aren't harming others- but there's the problem if I expect a child to go out into public schools, playgrounds, clubs, teams etc. then my decision to not vaccinate my children is going to impact other people. There should not be a resurgence of diseases almost eradicated because of parents that read false news, propaganda, or became afraid about something they did not understand. I would love to say that vaccines are just the crazy millenials, but I truly want to understand technology and the way medicine can benifit is based on science not fear. And there's less of a choice because my decision not to could harm those around me.
