For some peculiar reason photos taken with the phone held vertically get rotated when posted on steemit. Frustrating really. Any advice?

I had a similar result a few weeks ago. I would suggest that you use a photo editor make a minor crop so it is not a standard aspect ratio. Steemit posts the image with a pixel width of 640 and removes metadata.
