There are diverse cultures and tradition in the hart of Africa, Nigeria. I just want to share this ones with you steemians. This particular picture you are seeing is an aged long cultural belief of the people of OBOLO in Nigeria, the spirited masquerade is called NGALA. The spirited masquerade is believed to dwell in the spirit land and as such it only visits the people ones in a year. When it is time for the masquerade to visit, there is always a festival to celebrate its arrival. Its only the priest that are allowed to go close to it, after the celebration the masquerade goes into tin air signifying that the year will be fruitful.
We move to another part of Nigeria called ANDONI. They have this masquerade called AGABA, its normally played by the youths at every festive period, pregnant women are not allowed to go near for them not to have miscarriage. The masquerade is believed to sanitised the community from unforseen evil forces, the sound of a flute always ushers in the masquerade, at the end of the festive period it goes into the ancestral forest to return in the next festive period.
We now move to another part called the OZOTOBO people that celebrates ATAFILIBO masquerade. this masquerade comes direct from the water to the field, on arrival the village head is expected to welcome it with some cola nuts and drinks, it (masquerade) then moves round the village which is believed to make the ground fruitful. At the end, the people gathers and make merry before the departure of the masquerade.
That's part of the African culture (Nigeria).
It's fun to see these things.
