70th Anniversary of Landrover in Australia: Part 1

in #vehiclephotography7 years ago (edited)

I must admit I was kinda dragged along to Cooma, NSW for this Landrover extravaganza. However, it has already been an awesome morning and I have learnt so much. There are hundreds of landrovers here, as you would expect, from lichen covered relics trailered here from people's sheds to Series 3 like ours to Defenders worth small fortunes. Everyone is super friendly and, as you can imagine, excited about all things Landrover.

What I really love about Landrovers is their old school feel. There is a real sense of integrity about them. Every one is so different, even if they are the same series. Some are beaten up, multi panelled workhorses. Some are military, complete with original army kit. Some are gentleman's weekenders, like this gorgeous old girl. The owner had made a lot of it himself, complete with a shaving cupboard and a bed that ran the length of the land rover when you pulled the seats down.

Some had long histories to them and wonderful stories, having been in the same family since they rolled off the factory floor. Some had the most beautiful paintwork and interiors.

Some were even done up as campers.

Some were designed to be dropped out of aeroplanes so were as lightweight as possible.

It has been an amazing day so far and I am glad I came. I am almost able to tell the difference between all the different sorts of landrovers too, nothing better than experience to teach you something.

There are a few lovely Steemians that I thought might enjoy these photos, so I say g'day to you as well:

Look out for Part 2 where we enter an off road course and the parade through town, and some other photos of course!

Thanks for mentioning my name! I specially like the winch on Picture 4. Never saw something like this before!

Its called a capstan winch. You wrap the rope around twice and pull rather than store the rope on the winch. They were made by Farey company who also make overdrives for landrovers. Yes, via PTO. 💗

I believe they are powered by the engine from a PTO.

I see, thanks! So no electrical winch like the modern ones like "Warn". So if the engine does not work means no winching possible, right?

That is correct.

They certainly don't make them like that anymore, do they?
These where from an era when things were really made to last.

Its interesting to see the progression across time. But they are definately hardy beasts!!!

Oh my landrover god! what a dream land!
I simply love them all, the wooden details on the green one.
I'm living now a life dilema... I have a car from 1975 that was my childhood dream, well... life goes on and now I don't even use that car anymore but it feels real deep to sell it to get a Land Rover (that I absolutely love).

What is your 1975 car?????? My first car was a 1971 Valiant sedan and i wish I never sold it!!!!!

And btw my hubby knows camel trophy and he was just going ohhhhhh my god.. yes!!! Here is a picture of the car Jamie is going to find and do up for me...

With a surfboard! Lovely.
HERE is a post with my classic car. I'm thinking a lot about selling it to get a Land Rover, or maybe get a LR abroad and travel from there, since they are quite expensive in Brazil.

That sounds like a good idea. If you keep thinking it, maybe one will appear!!! Yes, a surfboard.. although really its a stand up paddle board as thats what I surf these days. So lets keep praying to the Landrover gods together.. who knows!!!

I love this type of car. You made very great pictures my dear friend @riverflows. Have a great weekend. Greeting from @chanthasam
