It’s been a few days since the Vendée Globe started, and the excitement is very high. Real pro skippers have sailed out of Les Sables-d’Olonne and are now navigating their incredible journey around the world, some are gaining early advantages, while others try to anticipate weather variations in the wind. They are the embodiment of determination, but this is just the beginning!
Also my own virtual Vendée Globe adventure has officially begun. Since the last time I checked, the number of participants in the Virtual Regatta has skyrocketed to over 500,000 virtual sailors, I didn't think it would be so popular actually.
Currently, I’m holding my own pretty well in this massive fleet, my position fluctuates quite a bit, ranging from 50,000th to 200,000th depending on how well I manage the routing decisions. The competition is really hard and every little adjustment to the sails or to the path can make a big difference at this stage of the race.
Recently, we’ve been navigating west of Portugal, carefully planning the best route through changing winds and weather patterns. Now we’ll be passing west of the Canary Islands.
Deciding the best route and studying the winds is a fascinating challenge, even though it may seem boring and time consuming at times. Buy think for the real skippers out there who do this all day 😅. This virtual race is helping me feel connected to their adventure in some way.
