We complained that the country was in disarray
Everything was going to kingdom come
We claimed nothing enticed us about the country
We weren't proud of our citizenship
We complained about how useless the Naira was
We were sad about the unavailability of jobs
We complained about the high cost of living
Everything went up, defying gravity
We wanted something else for ourselves
We wanted things to be better for our children
It has been the same clique for sixteen years
We were tired of hearing the same story
We waited for when we could use our power
It's during the elections that we're most powerful
We schemed to remove the old cabal
We chose to speak with one voice
They came preaching the message of change
They told us what we wanted to hear
We citizens deserved to live better
That's what they used in cajoling us
They promised us heaven on earth
They promised free meals for our children
They promised improved health care
Even that our currency will equal the dollar
We decided to stay true to ourselves
We rid ourselves of the old cabal
We ushered in the new leaders
We believed good things laid ahead
We've come a long way since that time
And we're mostly regretting our actions
Yes, we saw the change for which we voted
But it was different from what we expected
The old regime was accused of corruption
Several people were brought to book
Huge amounts of money were recovered
And money was saved for the future
But we got little of what we were promised
We thought our currency was useless
Now, it's two times more useless
We're screaming in agony
More people are losing their jobs
People are being detained for speaking their minds
Old feuds were brought to the surface
Now, we've lost our unity
The salaries were not increased at all
But the cost of living has increased drastically
Despite the fight against corruption
Life is worst than it used to be
Amidst high amounts of corruption
Our currency maintained a certain price
But despite the fight against corruption
It has fallen to half its original value
But should we really complain?
I guess we got what we really chose
It might not be what we wanted
But we got the change we voted for.
Thank you for sparing your time to go through this. I remain your humble little boy.
