No Time for the Tube
I’ve been in and out of academia since 2006 and oddly enough, never got into da YouTubes. I was more of movie/tv streamer and never really saw the appeal of short clips featuring people’s faces up close and never really like music videos. Oddly enough, a year or two after finishing up graduate school, I’ve found a strange joy in these little online videos and I try to sneak them in during lunch breaks, commutes to work, and any lazy Sunday. This, added to the fact that I’ve been a bit bedridden and glued to Youtube for the past week and still a bit to sick to output posts of major brainpower, has led me to try my hand at a little Youtube curation! These are the channels I stop by at least a few times a week to check for latest updates, my Youtube Daily.
Before I start looking at these unique channels, I just want to state beforehand that I think all of these choices would be great for Steemit. I know we’ve seen Youtube stars trickle into this platform in recent weeks and I do believe this is an overall great trend. These are high-quality content producers with great experience in the field and huge dedicated followings. The ones I’ve picked are especially impressive to me as bootstrapped individuals with lots of know-how to offer.
Angry Centaur Gaming
Or ACG for short. @JeremyPenter (twitter ID not Steemit…yet) is probably my absolute favorite game reviewer. I’m a big gamer myself and even though I can’t slog through more than a handful a year, I like to at least edumacate myself on the latest in gaming development. I have yet to find a channel as dedicated to all the ins and outs of the latest games as ACG, each review video spanning at least 4-5x the length of typical IGN/Gamespot reviews. He goes through every aspect of the game systematically - visuals, sound, acting, gameplay, technical issues - after rigorously testing the same game on multiple console.
On top of all that goodness, he’s got a fast-paced and witty presentation style (/personality?) and his videos are filled with incredible, far-reaching analogies and humor. This is not some hairless pre-teen giving you a scrubbed 5-minute commentary that is immediately forgettable. This is a battle-hardened gamer that gives full frontal on all of his reviews.
Would really love to see this guy pounding it out on Steemit.
Bearing
Some of you may be bleeding from the eyes just from seeing the name on this one. I’m a pretty left-leaning progressive from the US, but by GOD, do I need a dose of the farthest thing from politically correct cultural every so often. Leftist ideology has admittedly become the most flavorful Koolaid in a great deal of this country and I find the need of regularly balancing that out with the most Free Speechiest thing I can find on the internet.
Besides the inflammatory title on this video, Bearing actually presents very sound and reasonable (counter)arguments to a great deal of progressive fanaticism in the world. It’s wildly entertaining and strangely educational. As a cherry topper, he laces all his videos with so many words you no longer hear in the American Northeast.
And I love that he uses a static cartoon as a persona to cut through all that noise. Bearing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I do appreciate everything he’s trying to do.
Phillip de Franco
Sure, this seems like a cop-out mainstream pick for my last choice, but for an ‘old-man millennial’ like myself, de Franco is a very recent discovery. I work in the sector of “culture” and I find it paramount to keep a pulse on popular culture. De Franco is best and brightest at this, maintaining a fairly agnostic position on everything he presents. I post a few weeks back on DEEPFAKES came from watching him -
I’ve learned a tremendous deal from him. Just in the last month I’ve gotten up to full speed on the Tide Pods epidemic, the status of Trump’s relationship with former pornstar Stormy Daniels, and what the status of reality with modern-day rendering.
De Franco is a bit much for my aged brain to take in too often but I think he has the most efficient independent channel. On top of all that, he’s an active investor/user of cryptocurrency!
More to Come
You can probably get a sense of my entertainment palette from just these 3. I’ll bring more in the future and if you have any suggestions of what I should binge on, leave some links in the comments below. Steem on!
I am expecting more suggestion in the future.
Nice suggestions! I enjoy CaptainSparklez and I think the EvanTube family is funny!
