A VIDEO TOUR OF THE PAPA-PEPPER HOMESTEAD LAND

in #video8 years ago

We finally bought our land, so now I'll give you a tour!

The land itself is almost eight acres. It is mostly wooded, but we have already done some work on it. I'll add a few photos and a little bit of written information, but here is the video!

THE LAND!

For those of you who don't watch video, or if you want even more, here are some photos.

The patch of land along the road is mostly brush-hogged already. We have started landscaping the edge of it, and are considering getting some sort of cattle to graze here and reproduce, so we don't have to mow it. We will also get some rabbit tractors going soon so they can eat the fresh grass.

We've started rotating some of our hogs and some goats that belong to @bluerthangreen and @allforthegood through the land too. They do an excellent job removing all sorts of plants (even Poison Ivy) from the land and allow us to work it much easier afterwards.

By the time that they are done with an area, it is easy to separate the rocks, branches, and trees from the soil. We've got some plans on how to craft this acreage, but we have to be able to walk across it to do so, so the animals removing the Green Brier and Poison Ivy for us really helps.

Right now, most of the land is just thick forest. For one, this means that the land is fertile enough to support a lot of vegetation, so that's good. Also, we can use the trees for firewood and the branches for mulch, so that will help. We will be replacing the trees that we do not need with ones that produce edible things like nuts, fruits, or berries.

I also just planted our first peppers on the land today. Yes, they were my favorites, the Ghost Pepper. I believe that many more will be grown here eventually, but the first peppers on the @papa-pepper homestead have already been planted. Yes, today is a happy day for my people! Perhaps when the harvest comes in, I can even mail some to some of you!

As always, I’m @papa-pepper and here’s the proof:

This is very similar to our property in southern Indiana, wild berries, sassafras trees, and dense woods. Our woods is littered with over growth though and we need some goats to eat some of it back, never thought to borrow a neighbors animals though thanks for that idea. What type of property fencing do you plan to use and how are you constructing it? Good luck with the property plans friend.

We are not sure what we will use for the perimeter fence yet, but are currently using cattle panels on the areas that we are rotating them.

I just picked up 5 ghost pepper plants myself the other day. I've always grown Jalapenos and other peppers but never messed with any of the serious stuff like ghost peppers or carolina reepers.

I happenned to be at a local garden store the other day and saw they had them and figured I have to pick these up. I wound up getting 5 of them, the guy at the register was like are you sure you need 5 lol. I guess they grow pretty large and produce a lot of peppers right?

My plants are maybe 4-5 inches tall so I'm guessing a few weeks old at least. I hear peppers are about 100 to 130 days from germination is that correct ? Guessing I should have them sometime in August

Sometimes they can months to truly produce, but getting hundreds of peppers per plant is not unheard of. Thankfully, they also dehydrate well if you cut them in half.

You may want to try this recipe I created. Many have been seriously impressed with it.

https://steemit.com/food/@papa-pepper/finally-papa-s-secret-recipe-green-ghost-salsa-released-for-the-first-time-ever-on-steemit

I heard the soil needs to be kept pretty warm. I live in Chicago. I wound up planting one in a pot and the rest in the soil. Do you have any advice in terms of which is better? Downside to my garden is if we get a cold snap I can't bring them inside. I've been trying to keep them moist as we've been having some 90 something degree days here but making sure they aren't soaked.

Thanks for sharing the salsa recipe, I love a good salsa, especially tomatillo salsa's and my gf's family is Mexican so I'm sure they'll enjoy it as well were always competing for who can find the best salsa. I got a few more months to wait for my peppers but soon as they are ripe I'll be trying this out. Thanks again.

@papa-pepper, this is a wonderful piece of land, add a bunch of redwoods and sequoias and a couple rivers and hills and you have the sweet little plot I live in! It seems you realized this long ago, but I think more people need to start seeking out their own homesteads instead of suffocating in the concrete monstrosities of cities. If you don't mind, could I use some of your pictures of your homestead as inspiration for my art?

Use the photos! Also, I miss the redwoods...

Yes! redwoods are so amazing, just love the coloring.

awesome...
I had ten acres on the Llano..but nothing like what you got.

LOL!

Yeah, it looks a little worse.

we called that 'wednsday'...you should be there on monday
monday is BAD.

Lol!

A fantastic plot of land -- congratulations!!

I'm so happy for you, Mama-Pepper, and the baby-Peppers.

The forest of edibles sounds like a fantastic project -- I await the inevitable progress blogging for that :D

@shayne

Thank you very much @shayne. Ever thought of doing a video interview with me?

I suppose I have thought about it :D
You and a few other notable steemians.

I presume you'd be interested since you're asking about it.

Are you on steemit.chat or is there someplace better to contact you privately?

love it...you have some goats !

Those we borrowed, but they are on our list to get.

I am so happy for you bro! The comments at the end brought me to tears! God has his hand on you and your family! Can"t wait to come and see it in person! Love you guys!

Well done becoming a land owner. At last you get to see something for your hard work.
Mama, like all mamas, will be happy, that is the secret to a long happy life.
Happy Wife = happy life
The littleies being happy is a good by product as well

Its gorgeous !!! .. It reminds me a little like the countryside here in Ireland!!!.. I live in the city but its my dream one day to live in the countryside , there is nothing more beautiful than that vast landscape as far as the eye can see and the simple sound of serenity !!!.. Good Luck and much happiness!

Thank you so much @aineyann.

You're most welcome

Dude congratulations! I strive to one day be able to quit my 9-5, own my own land and live off grid ^_^ amazing stuff you got going on here @papa-pepper!

Yeah, we are getting there. In fact, 9-5 even sounds a little nice. I left home for work at 2:30 am on Friday and returned at 1 am today... Gotta get out of that. Cutting lawns in the next state may not be the best idea...

Geeze I feel for ya man 😅. Hopefully all the great content you publish here will help you leave that situation. Assuming that's what you want ^_^!

nice land....that's the land I always dream of.....

Thank you. We really like it and are looking forward to seeing what it may become one day!

you are welcome....my friend...share with us, the outcomes of this land.... :)

Homestead Land looks like an amazing project!

I hope your 'Ghost Peppers' grow fast so you can share photos with us!

Thanks!

If you are in the US, I could even send you some of the harvest when it comes in @phrase! Do you like HOT peppers?

You have an awesome place @papa-pepper ... thanks for sharing it with the STEEMIT Community!

The only reason we still had enough money to purchase the land was because of the steemit community, so how could I not share it? Thanks everyone!

Once we build a huge one... well do a steemit meetup there LOL JK... I should start or build a Las Vegas STEEMIT meetup one of these days. I'm just a minnow and started 10 days ago... give me a few months and ill be a whale .... maybe :)

Meet ups are lots of fun. Organize one!

I'm talking about a HUGE STEEM EVENT lol

This is amazing! Proof of what a community can achieve together! God bless!

Absolutely!

Thats amazing living the dream ! Im excited at the prospects steemit could bring

Living the dream and paying it forward to folks like @darthnava. Congratulations brother! We should all strive to be self sufficient and as kind as yourself..Stay real my friend :)

I am glad that you appreciate it. Thanks @necrophagist!

Not a bad start. But now comes the fun part. All of the ass busting, back breaking work that goes into developing a homestead.

Good luck, and thanks for sharing both your success and failures in this endeavor...

Yup, we've got our work cut out for us! Thanks @guide.prepper!

Congrats! You should introduce us to all your animals too :)

We'd like to meet them!

I think the @little-peppers will be doing a series on that starting tonight or tomorrow.

That's what everyone is hoping for, farm land, animals to breed and survive from and away from the city life. Nice pictures. Great start!

It is our current goal. Looking good so far.

So awesome, livin' the dream!

Yup, still haven't woke up!

On a side note, do you think you could give me a few sentences about how excellent it was to win hundreds of dollars just by playing a game on steemit? I was going to feature the previous winners in a post one this season is done. Also, do you have a photo I could use for that?

Heck yeah! What sort of photo are you after?

Just one of our first winner to use!

Congratulation to you...very nice land!!!

Awesome looking place, that's the one thing I miss. Ever since I moved to Miami I've been stuck in the concrete jungle....with a bit of sand 😂

At least you've got the sand! Thank you!

Nice ...
My homestead floats lol
Enjoy the adventure... ⚓Cheers🍺

And off grid is the only way to go ...👍

Thank you, we will try to keep ours out of the water!

That is quite a pepper:

"In 2007, Guinness World Records certified that the Ghost pepper was the world's hottest chili pepper, 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce. The Ghost chili is rated at more than 1 million Scoville heat units (SHUs)."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhut_jolokia

Half of the rating of "US Grade Pepper Spray" on this chart:

I like to eat them up sometimes, even while flying bumblebees...

Congratulations on the land purchase, @papa-pepper.

Thank you @customnature. I was a big step forward for us.

good luck with all your plans! :)

Thanks @schlees! We will keep you posted!

I think we may have an identical mind set...lovely place mate

Opposite side of the world, same thoughts!

I suspect we probably have the same method of thought enhancement tool ; )

Congrats on owning your own chunk of earth. I am envious and hope to join you as a property owner someday!

It feels good to be able to be a steward over a portion of it. We will see how it works!

You exude a sense of capability. All the faith in you to do it right

Very impressed with the planting you show you are already getting ready to do. Sounds like you just bought yourself a full time job with 8 acres but it's an investment that beats all others (in yourself). Good job!

Yes, it should be interesting! We are excited!

Awesome news. Looks like you have your work cut out for you. I can only imagine that you will have loads of fun. Enjoy the work ahead.

We will enjoy it. Little by little we will be working on it.

Have you ever watched the show hot ones on youtube. It's interviews over different hot sauces on hot wings. I recommend you watch a couple, I think you would like it. And maybe you should do your own hot ones steemit episode and let us ask you questions while you eat hot sauce on wings and answer. Some people can't handle the scovilles l but I'm sure you can haha!!

Never heard of that, but I do like talking to people over a few shots of hot sauce.

Here is a video of @papa-pepper, @stellabelle, @gifted-gaia, and @winstonwolfe doing some shots of hot sauce.

Haha it looked like you just kinda talked them all into doing it and you end trying to get them to do more! I'm going to have to watch some more of the show and see if it effected anyone! your meant to do a steemit hot ones. But the hotter the hot sauce the faster you gotta answer things (at least in hot ones)! It makes for some entertaining videos, and I'm sure everyone here would love it and they would come up with good questions. I will even pitch in SBD's for hot sauce!!

Great idea, we will see!

Looks really nice, best wishes to you

Thank you! We like it!

have you checked out matt powers' permaculture videos on youtube or hi own site? he's got a lot of good information on erosion control using swales and other strategies i found this you may find it informational i really like your setup, i think you and your family are going to be hugely successful in your endeavor. best of luck!

Yes, swales are on our to do list!

Thank you so much for showing us round your place. I absolutely LOVE IT. You are going to make some beautiful memories there, and are definitely going to be one fit and healthy family. Thank you again @papa-pepper

That is the goal. Thank you too!

Those log stacks against trees remind me of when I helped my dad clear some trees out. Here it's almost entirely pine trees. I miss the deciduous forests of the part of Minnesota where I grew up.

I cleared a lot of this with my dad, @grandpa-pepper! Good times and memories!

First of all CONGRATS on the purchase of your land. With all that clay, are you planning on building using it to make a cob home? With all those tree's, where would you be putting your orchard of say apples, pear, etc. Love the size and the tremendous potential that this property has. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure exactly about the house style yet, and we will phase out existing forest for fruit trees and such.

You and the peppers have a lot of work ahead of you. But all that work will be worth it because you will be able to see and touch the end results. Working on a 9-5 job and being payed in dollars after Fed. Govt. takes out 35% off the top leaves you tired with nothing to show but a payroll check. I wish you all the luck in the world. Your energy and enthusiasm are remarkable. Peace

Thank you for your encouragement!

Congratulations on the purchase of your homestead land. Have you considered using sheep to graze which would help with the mowing?

Yes, we are considering that.

My wife and oldest daughter want about 10 acres to put horses on. They love tending to them and riding. Something like what you got would be perfect for them. Congrats.

One of my @little-peppers took a ride today. I told them house first then horse when it comes to our own.

Thanks for the tour! I wish you and your family the best! Steem on!

I love having a little slice of property @papa-pepper. We're on 10 acres and surrounded by other neighbors with acreage and woods and love the different animals we have roaming around. We have deer, otters, little foxes, sometimes hogs, peacocks and many other species roaming around all the time and we love it.

I am so happy that you are getting to live your dream and are sharing it with us. You are truly blessed and I pray you and your family will always be so.

Thank you very much man!

That just made my day dude!
I've been watching the price of STEEM go up and seeing you get closer and closer to the dream. now that you have the land, it really is full STEEM ahead to freeeeeeedom!

If Steemit is a scam, it's the best scam I've ever seen. ;-)

Who knows, it may even get me a house one day. (or at least a letter box)

It really is, excellent timing!

Nice spot, those animals should help you clear it in no time. jbcoin

They are hard at work!

Beautiful farm @papa-pepper!

All this seems so otherworldly to me. Ahh.. to be able to breathe unpolluted air, eat clean healthy organic food and raise animals humanely... what else can one ask for. Pictures of your farm make me want to get out of this concrete jungle.

How about a fish pond?

I always dreamed of my own pond... a lot. One day, I gave up on that dream.

Now, I have started dreaming again!

Congrats peppers! I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys turn it into! Good luck!

Thank you so much!

I would show you how much land i have but.. there isnt much to see. Thanks for the tour and allowing me to dream a bit.

Thanks for dreaming. Sometimes that is how it starts.

Not too unrealistic anymore. Tripled my money in just over a month of trading/investing. Steemit also.. Maybe but for now i will keep dreamin

Great photos.. thanks for taking us along with you :)

Thank you for coming along!

That's wonderful. Congrats and enjoy!

Thank you so much. It's a huge blessing.

Lots of work ahead, looks like I may have to come down from Saskatchewan to give you a hand!

That would be appreciated!

Wow man this land looks awesome. It reminds me of living in Mississippi. The peppers will soon be in full production! (Talking about the garden)

Haha, I am sure your family will thrive on property like this. What other things are you going to grow? Oh, do you have room for animals?

I see the Boar Goats, which we used to have a lot of them.

Good luck to you my friend!

~ @Timbo

We will grow everything, and the @little-peppers are about to start an animal series about all of them,

Nice, and I thought you might say something like that. Good to know it! Can't wait to see the progress!
