These piglets sure are smart!
If you saw my recent post on weaning day, then you know that our first nine piglets from the hog that @smailer got us have been weaned already... well, mostly anyway.
You see, they still like to try to sneak in with mama when we aren't looking!
Just look at them peeking to see if I am watching! Yes, they know what my thoughts are, so they usually go along with me while I am present. When I am not looking, though, it's a different story.
In this video, you can see how they know when they are up to no good. On the bright side, usually I just have to tell them, "Little Pig, go home!" and they will run back to their pen. @Mama-pepper gets a real kick out of it. It is a bit fun, and interesting to see them obey. We will have to train them a bit better.

Yup, just another adventure on the homestead, and a new chapter in our lives. It's interesting to see what peculiar things we will encounter as we continue down this path. As always, thanks for coming along for the ride! Steem on.

Why not raise goats too, @papa-pepper? I learned it is healthier than pork or beef. People in the Bible raise goats for meat more than pigs.

I love goats. I used to take mine for walks in the woods. They'll follow you around like a dog.
The best way to clear new ground for a garden is to fence it off, get a couple of kids (billy kids are cheap and there's a good market for them in the Muslim community) and let the goats forage everything they can. Goats are browsers and not grazers, which means they eat leaves and twigs mostly and not grass so much. Whatever the goat eats that doesn't turn into goat turns into fertilizer. After the goats are done, put pigs in there. Pigs are diggers. They'll dig up the roots, bring rocks to the surface till the soil for you and add their own bit of fertility.
Note: when you plant your first garden, you'll have an abundance of weeds, some of which will be pigweed and lambs quarters, both of which are deliciously edible and filled with nutrition. Its a win, win, win all around.
My goats only follow me when i want to feed them.
I didn't need to feed my goats much because I lived where it was very green with lots of brush. They always followed me whenever I let them out of their enclosure. If you raise your goats on concrete and you have to feed them, maybe that changes their behavior. Also, I only ever had two goats at at time (unless they had kids) so a herd of goats might be a different situation altogether and act differently. My goats were of African ancestry: Nubians. Interesting.
Thats cool. I have up to twenty goats at present and i live in a place where it is green too but because of theft. I have to put them in a n enclosure.
Nice, just be wary that goats are fast plant-eaters.

And can sometimes be emotional. Just yesterday i took some piglets off their mum to give to another mum because i wanna sell her. Since then she refused to eat

They get over that real soon. The first time I raised a couple of "wieners" I used sheep fencing for their pen. It worked great until they hit the 250 pound mark. Then my pigs being, well, pigs, started to stick their snouts through the wire to root around the outside perimeter of the pen. I see that you have a pen made of welded wire. That's the only way to go. Sheep fencing is twisted together to form 6x6 inch squares. After awhile the pigs found out that if they pushed hard enough the wires would slide apart. Not long after that, I found them in my garden rooting out my carrots. I was furious (I was a much angrier and younger man back then). I ran up and kicked one in the side as hard as I could, spraining my ankle in the process, but the pig just gave out a grunt and kept rooting. I then got a big stick and started whipping them. They finally relented and ran back to their pen, picking a spot in the fence and then pushing their way through. Finished on carrots, needless to say by the next afternoon they were in the freezer.
Soon, they won't be able to fit through the holes anymore, but larger pigs can present larger problems. Thanks for the info and story!
btw, have you ever seen pigs free range using an electric fence ? the perimeter of say an acre or 5 or w/e has a single "hot" fence as the perimeter, but the "trick" is that the outside of the fence is tractor tilled once a wk or so depending on the weather. Even full grown hogs won't cross over to the tilled areas as they receive a shock if they try. I have seen this many times, it really does work. Be a little tuff for you however, seeing how your in the woods and not out on a flat farm ... My point actually was that piglets learn from mom n dad not to go into the 'tilled' areas. pigs are smarter than people want to believe !!!!

Pigs are pretty smart critters... I spent a good bit of my teens helping on my uncle's farm; he kept about 100 pigs... the piglets were remarkable learners.
About 100? Cool! I guess we have over 20 right now.

Pigs are amazing and can be stubborn sometimes. The way they scream when they are hungry. They can also be destructive. They have strong snout and use it to destroy their snout. These are the issues i face on my farm. Oh should i call it my farm. Maybe i can. It belongs to my mum. I work there as i am currently unemployed. But really pigs are great. I love them.

It makes sense that they are trouble makers. I guess it's part of growing up. It doesn't seem to matter what animal you are, there is a thrill in pushing the boundaries and breaking the rules that probably resides deep within all of our instincts.
It's been interesting to follow these little guys, I hope you keep this series going.
It seems to be attracting a lot of attention anyway ;) I just scrolled down a bit and there's some interesting thread about getting goats lol. Those things are pretty rambunctious as kids, however adorable none the less and from what I understand fairly useful to have around.
