This is quite tricky case. First of all this is erogame and visual novel. Very specific genre of PC gaming. Why is this game here? Because this game has one goal - to make you feel awful. The whole story are based on the meat, skin, blood, disgust and dirt. In this game there is no light or hope, you need to beat the game to understand it. If you have a bad mood and you want to make it even worse. You want to fall in a mud puddle and lie down for a few hours. Welcome to Saya no Uta. But..but the game has a great story and a visual art with a great soundtrack. Although the story is not pleasant, and the characters all are crazy, game still deserves your attention.

Very underrated game from the creator of Resident Evil series. We will not discuss the problems of the gameplay,game mechanics,the similarity with resident evil series. We're here to dive into something viscous and bloody and the game gives you this opportunity. The whole game is filled with bloody violence and it's done so damn beautiful. Despite the simple plot, the game is filled with great imaginations of his creators. Starting from the beautiful and disgusting locations ending with bizarre monsters. Make this game great successor of Resident Evil series.

Our top 3 opened by very strange case. This is no ordinary classic horror. The game is very realistic in terms of story(almost). In the game you will not find grotesque scene of violence covered by a blanket of metaphors. This time your enemies are people. Scary, evil, dirty, but still people. People who came to the bottom of the abyss, and found there the absolute evil. And along with the main hero you will walk the same way. In the end you will find only sadness and dirt left by this game. Are you ready to enter the building, which I mentioned in the beginning? Only now you know that in this building are addicts and murderers.

Why 2nd place? First, to understand this, we need to understand a few things. We need to forget about Dead space 2,3. No, they are not bad, but it's a different games. We must look only on first game of the series. The uniqueness of the game is that it is horror in space. So few stories have been told in this genre and now we have this game. I think Dead Space is the story of loneliness. Among all the monsters and murders we have man who deny reality. First place goes to Silent Hill. It was too obvious. But we still consider the simple truth that 3 part of SH is the best part of the series. Many will disagree but I will try to explain why. The SH-2 was about the madness of a sick mind trapped in his own world. But what if the player could not associate themselves with the main character? All metaphors immediately disappeared. The story becomes distant from the player. SH-3 has a different approach to the mind of the player. Third part goes much deeper into to human perception. The game creates the theme of terror. Grotesque and explicit violence. You don't need to associate themselves with someone, the whole story carries a deep fears of the perception of human figures wrapped in human skin. The abomination that leads to nausea. It cuts much deeper into your consciousness. It's not quite a personal story as it was in SH 2. This is the descent to hell is very subtle, not like the classic description and much more terrible. This is why SH 3 got first place.

I have only played the Dead Space series from this list. Will try out Call of Cthulhu as I have heard from various sources that it is the best.
I find the choice of Silent Hill 3 the best of the series to be interesting. I actually felt the "horror" in that game was more expected and not as terrifying. For me, SH3 was more of a simple expansion on the universe considering its direct tie in to the first game. I actually have more terrifying memories of SH4, but at the same time that game was more annoying than the previous ones. I still feel SH2 was my favorite of the series, and Pyramid Head's meandering around through the earlier parts of the game will always stick with me as the most terrifying experience in a game ever.
I have a friend that played a lot of those games that you talked about. I have the FEAR collection but never played yet :P
