By now, I’m sure most of us have caught wind of the Netflix Original Series “Stranger Things”. The show is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, and tells the story of three young boys who set out to resolve the strange disappearance of their friend, Will – who went missing a short distance away from a secret government testing facility.
As the series progresses, we’re introduced to a girl named Eleven, who the boys nickname El. Its quickly revealed that El has actually escaped from the previously mentioned government facility. It’s then explained to the viewer that numerous mind-altering tests took place within this facility, mostly involving El. As a result of these programs, El has inherited the ability to manipulate the world around her using only her mind. However, that’s not all, as El is also known for having helped discover an extra dimension of reality – a type of “dark world”, in a way.
Throughout the the show, this supposed “dark world” is described as being eerily similar to the world we live in right now, however, everything is dark and quote, “upside down”. It’s later explained that this extra dimension was discovered and subsequently visited following a partially-failed experiment that was being carried out with El. Because of this, a doorway into the dark world has been left open, and the creatures of the dark are capable of entering our current reality, and we are capable of entering theirs.
Now this obviously makes a great plot for a sci-fi series. However, according to recent scientific discoveries, many of the events that took place in Stranger Things may actually be completely plausible, if not entirely possible.
For example, in Stranger Things, the dark world is accessed through means of a portal, or dimensional doorway. This is important, because as recent as 2007, study’s have suggested that dimensional doorways may, in fact, exist; most likely in the form of black holes.
A black hole is essentially an enormously large vacuum, inside of which nothing can escape – not even light. According to Einstein, black holes are created when matter is compressed into almost incomprehensibly small spaces, resulting in a tear, or portal, that many modern scientists believe empties out into other portions of space or possibly even another dimension.
It sounds completely crazy, yes, but that’s science for you.
So, how does this tie into the idea of a supposed dark world? Well, it’s obviously assumed that this dark world would reside in a different dimension.
Now, I’m sure we’ve all come to accept the fact that the world we live in is comprised of 3 separate dimensions, however, physicists have recently claimed that this isn’t true. In fact, our Universe is now believed to be comprised of at least 10 dimensions, though some researchers claim that there may be as many as 11.
Think of it like this: a single dimension would essentially just be a dot. This dot is capable of moving left and right, but nothing else. Now, lets add in the second dimension. This allows the dot to not only move left and right, but now it can move up and down as well. Now, add the third dimension. The dot now has depth and becomes a sphere and is capable of moving around just like you and I. It can travel up, down, left, right, diagonally, virtually anywhere our minds can comprehend, this dot is capable of getting there.
However, there is yet another dimension to add. This fourth dimension is time. This is basically a determination of where you are at any given moment, past, present, or future, in our currently perceivable three dimensions. It’s been debated by many scientists what this “time” truly means, but we will just leave it at that for now. After adding in this fourth dimension, the dot can now move forward and backward through time, just like you or I would walk down a road.
Hopefully this far everything is making sense, though, things are about to get weird.
We now have to add in the 5th and 6th dimensions.
The 5th dimension would allow for our dot to move left or right through time. Yes, left or right – whatever that means. The 6th would allow the dot to move up or down through time.
Basically, these extra-dimensional beings would be capable of moving through and manipulating time at their own leisure. If you’ve seen Stranger Things, this is probably starting to make a bit of sense, as this theory was perfectly described in Season 1, Episode 5, as the Acrobat and the Flea.
Now, there are still four additional dimensions to add, but these are irrelevant to the topic at hand, as they are believed to essentially be bridges between the lower six.
Think back to the black holes we mentioned a moment ago. Now, imagine a machine that were capable of not only creating, but harnessing the energy of a black hole; essentially a machine that can develop a black hole at the single push of a button. Now, imagine that this machine is the size of a doorway, and we were capable of entering and exiting this black hole at will; essentially instantaneously traveling through both space and time with the simple push of a button.
If scientists and physicists are correct, this newly created black hole could very well lead us into another dimension, or another realm of reality that we are currently incapable of experiencing or even observing.
Because of this, it stands to reason that the events of Stranger Things are entirely possible, and highly plausible. In fact, the technology required may already exist, hidden away in a secret government base, located in the heart of Indiana.
One thing that would be important to not is that creating a blackhole on earth (specifically a small one) would become extremely volatile as they shed mass in a form of energy; meaning a black hole of 1 kg would explode with nearly 90,000,000,000 J of energy assuming you could isolate it from all matter and prevent it from growing. This is due to the energy mass equivalence (E=mc2), and hawking radiation. The second big problem with making a portal from a single black hole is that the tear in spacetime would be random and we wouldnt be able to control where it goes but if you could hypothetically use 2 backholes and connect them the you would have a wormhole through space-time.
I am not trying make this seem incorrect as the read was interesting, I just wanted to bring in the context of the potential for trying to make a blackhole on earth would be extremely dangerous and difficult. Anyways the read was good and worthwhile.
