Sunday Vinyl - Stories

in #vinyl4 years ago

Jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds 1978
Forty three years on and it's still a brilliant album. With the rich sound of Richard Burton narrating David Essex with his unmistakable Cockney accent and the brilliant singer Julie Covington who did the best version of Don't cry for me Argentina but stupidly turned the part down in the West End musical Evita. I still feel sad when Thunderchild is destroyed. 😞

Rick Wakeman - Journey to the centre of the earth 1974

Based on Jules Verne's novel this is Ricks musical interpretation of the science fiction story while playing 32 pianos, synthasisers and organs all at the same time. Thing is, you have to remember, back in 74 all this electronic stuff was cutting edge for us and playing in a cape, well, you couldn't help but be amazed.

My dad Had his two other albums "The six wives of Henry the eighth" and "The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table" I suspect they were thrown out when he passed away?

I know it's only two albums but they took up all of the time that I'm allowed to have for Vinyl Sunday. Interestingly, my daughter, who has never heard Journey to the centre of the earth thoroughly enjoyed it!

I own all of the vinyl albums shown here except for the few that belong to my wife. Each album is generally played in its entirety unless I dislike a side.

I love War of the Worlds. Discovered the LP of my dad back when I was a little kid. I was fascinated with the amazing artwork of the LP, the brilliant music and story. I still randomly put it on when I need to go on a long drive in the car.

It's probably been over 30 years since I've played any of these LP's. I've had to but a record bath to wash them in. LOL

Hi Pete, I posted my own WOTW vinyl just a few days ago, a wonderful coincidence! Just to level it up, I've got tickets to see Rick Wakeman next year, pandemic permitting. Great vinyl posts, looking forward to reading more in the future...

Box set? I'm jealous. I've been running Vinyl Sunday for a few weeks now. I think I'm into the "odds and sods" now rather than albums by artists. 😄

If you're into odds and sods thats surely a sign that you need to buy some more!

Hi Pete, Being carefree and young in the 70's I have the greatest memories of with vinyls. The younger generations are not so much in the know but just think what the have missed out on. Making one day a vinyl day is a great idea. We have a small recored player with a box full of vinyls and enjoy playing them now and again too.

TBH, vinyl is making a bit of a comeback; look in your local supermarket. Most have a vinyl stand these days. I get that vinyl is bulky and an old technology, BUT! There's something tactile about holding and playing a record. I don't care what any expert says. Vinyl sounds and feels warmer, and mp3's on your phone doesn't come with song sheets and artwork booklets.

I remember WotW at the time, but I didn't have a copy. Found a single CD version in a charity shop a while back, but it's missing a few bits. Guess I can listen to it elsehwere.

Wakeman is a great musician, but I've not listened to that much of his solo stuff. Need to check out more of that too. I need some background music when I'm working.

Hope you had a good weekend. I've been out all day and I'm knackered. Kicked up some discussion with a post though :D
