30 DAYS VISA.
If you have plans for max 30 days holidays in Indonesia there is no much to worry about.
VISA ON - ARRIVAL
When landing at Indonesia airport you get the stamp to stay these 30 days and you don't have to pay anything for it. The arrival date is already counted as day 1. They call this "free visa" and you can not extend your stay in the country if you decide to stay longer than 30 days.
60 DAYS VISA.
If like me you are planning to stay a bit longer, what you have to do is:
Inside the Indonesian airports there is a booth, just before you go through immigration.
You need to go to this counter and pay a $ 35 dollar fee. In my case I paid with my Australian card was charged a total of $ 49.75. They call this visa a "paid visa".
The clerk will give you a receipt for the payment and with this you go to the immigration queue. In immigration you have to show this receipt along with your passport so the employee places a stamp. This stamp will allow you to stay in the country for 30 days and extend for another 30 if you decide to stay longer in Indonesia.
HOW TO EXTEND THE VISA?
There are two different ways to do that, one by yourself and the other one with an agent.
ATTENTION WITH DEADLINES. You must do this process with at least 7 days before entering the second month. When the visa expire you can not renew and you will have to leave the country.
EXTEND VISA BY YOURSELF.
CUOST: US$ 35.00 / R$ 122,00 / RP 490.000 / AU$ 49.00
WHICH DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED TO HAVE IN YOUR HANDS?
• Passport
• Copy os passport
• Copy of the stamp that is attached to your passport by the immigration officer
• Ticket of your flight leaving Indonesia
PROCEDURE: You have to go 3 times in the immigration office. Hours of operation are between 8am and 11am. I recommend you to go earlier.
First day: when you get in immigration, ask for the free Visa Extend form. You will fill out this form with all your details, plus the address of where you will stay in Indonesia so it is good to have the hostel / hotel address on hand. Upon entering these documents, they will give you a date to return so you will continue your application process to extend your visa.
Second day: The second day you have to go there to take a photo and your fingerprints. Agents will ask you some questions like: What are you going to do here? What do you do in your country? You don't need to explain too much, just say Holidays, that you are an entrepreneur in Brazil came to enjoy indonesia, or something like this ha, probably you will not have much problem in that regard. You will leave your passport there and they give you another date to get it back.
Third day: Get back your passport, probably after a week of this whole process.
TIPS:
• There are many holidays in Indonesia, and immigration only works on business days. Don't leave to the last minute , the sooner you do it will be better for you.
• Print the copies before going on immigration.
EXTEND THE VISA WITH AN AGENT:
No doubt this option is easier and more convenient, but it is much more expensive. The difference is that you do not have to attend the first day or the last day. The agent fills out the form and do all the documentation for you.
Another advantage of doing this with an agent is, you don't need the ticket back in hands , yes, you must leave when the visa is over but you can buy the ticket latter.
COST: US$52.00 / R$ 180,00 / RP 700.000 / AU$ 70.00
WHICH DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED TO HAVE IN YOUR HANDS?
• Passport
• Copy os passport
• Copy of the stamp that is attached to your passport by the immigration officer
PROCEDURE:
You organize a meeting place with your agent, give all the documents to him and he will do everything for you. He will tell you when you have to go to the immigration office to take a photo and the fingerprints. The good thing about going with an agent is that you don't get the queue, he passes you in front and its very quickly.
After a week you get your passport back, you meet him somewhere or depend of the agent lives the passport in your hostel.
And that's it, you have another month to enjoy this incredible country.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE ILLEGAL IN INDONESIA?
Well, it is not a good thing... if this happens you will get in trouble in Indonesia, the fine for each day as illegal are 300,000 rupees, about U$23 american dollar. This is a punishment for OVERSTAY and this amount is charged at the time you are leaving the country. In worst case you can even go to jail if it stays illegal for a longer period. Also you are banned from entering Indonesia for at least the next five years.
IN CASE YOU LOVE INDONESIA AND WANT TO STAY A BIT LONGER... The option to leave the country and return is a cheap option. Singapore and Malaysia for example are very close, flights are short and are not expensive. Many people who lives in Indonesia do this, go in the morning and return in the afternoon on the same day. New Visa, no promise with immigration.
I know there are different kind of visas here, I will check about it and as soon as I have a little more information I will do an update here.
I've done this post based in my knowledge specially as a Brazilian resident. I believe most of the countries have the same Visa Requirements in Indonesia, but for precaution is good to check before you go. You can also check it here.
