Surviving A Power Outage In Relative Comfort

in #vlog7 years ago

It is still winter here and snow or wind often knocks out the power to our neighborhood during this season. In the summer it can be due to high wind as well so we are never fully safe from power outage.

Now we use solar panels to offset our energy bill so we do not fully suffer when the power goes out but we still need the grid to power our well pump and some other things which are not yet off the grid.

When you have a power outage there will be some basic essentials depending on your climate.

The first one is always going to be water. You can only live three days without water. And water is needed for cooking, sanitation and flushing toilets.

Second, if you are in a cold climate is heat. You will need to stay warm in order to prevent deadly hypothermia.

And then, there is food.

Finally you have comfort items.

You should always have at least a few gallons of water on hand for emergency. You just never know when the power can fail, even in the city. Out in the country, it is part of life. It just happens all the time and at random. Most outages are brief, lasting minutes to a few hours or even days.

Without water you have nothing to drink. This is the most important thing. Next is flushing toilets, followed by sanitation and cooking.

We keep dried foods on hand all the time which makes a quick grab and go meal when you are in a hurry but it also gives you something to eat during a power outage. Granola bars are the best and easiest option here. Dried fruits and snacks are great as well.

You should also keep a lot of canned foods on hand and keep the rotated for freshness. Only buy what you like and what you use. You can always just grab a spoon and eat from the can.

MREs and other survival meals are also great. MREs and related meals require no preparation and can be eaten cold, right out of the package. Freeze dried meals require water and some way to heat them up. These are not so good for a power outage.

For heat you can use candles, small space heaters or even a plumbing torch. I once used a tiny propane fishing heater in my house during a power outage. I used plumbing gas cans to fuel it. The plumbing gas cans are generally the same as the camping gas.

Keep LED lights or solar rechargeable LED lights on hand for comfort. Light can give you some comfort and help you extend the daylight hours, especially in cold winter climates when the days are short.

There are many other comfort items you can add but these are the most important.

If your new to this guy, this is where he pretends to live.

This is Jackass Acres, home to the idot that runs the TR Tech Testicle channel, Otherwise know as Trog Reid, full time ebegger and scammer) and his wife. (A mail order bride, bought and paid for by donations from YouTube viewers)

Message to the curious visitor: Buyer Beware! Troy Reid is not what he appears to be.
He is NOT a Suvivalist NOR off grid.
He plays victim at every opportunity.

He does have solar panels, but only as a prop to exploit his Off Grid tag.
Late last fall, Reid moved his second-hand golf cart batteries for his alleged solar system,
to an uninsulated box placed outside his cottage.
He has not shown proof he is making or consuming solar power ever.
It is safe to assume those batteries froze over the winter until he proves otherwise.

He also does Not homestead.

He has spent all of his time since fall running a crypto-currency mining scam in said cottage.
These computers produce excessive heat and noise as well as consume excessive energy and take up his entire living room.

This venture also brings the question whether or not he and his family actually live in that tiny, noisy cottage.

And his claim of having over 100,000 YouTube subscribers.....
he or a proxy buys subscribers from a third party at approximately 70 every day.
His daily views are currently at an all time low.
