Transference is common to those people they are comfortable to talk to and expectations may arise creating emotions that when unreciprocated can cause further problems..or further depression. Please just be aware that this can happen, we don't know on what stage they are in their depression where instead they need professional help.
Most times though, they only need a sympathetic ear who listens.
