Depression is a word that is used by many on a daily life basis, but does it mean the same when different people say it?? Well, I say depression is the most abused word in English Dictionary. A person who is going through real life situations and is sad for some reason explains his situation as "being depressed". Let me tell you one things, it is not depression.

We often misuse the word depression to express various other states of life and most of the time we are wrong, Depression cannot be a synonym for Sadness, it is a state of mind. Do not misuse the word just to make it look fancy, it is a real problem people face around the world. This is a problem which directly deals with mental health of a person and will not have barriers of sex, race, religion or region.
Every year over 1 million people die due to depression, it is a serious issue and something that grows with negligence on the education we have on depression. It is mostly unseen and it is hard to realize the state of depression unless you have gone through it yourself. In clinical terms depression often deals with chemical reactions happening in brain. It is not the same as your other bodily diseases.
It is reported that chances of depression is increasing with every passing generation, that means our generation of population is more likely to be depressed than our parents' generation. It is mostly due to the ever changing lifestyle of people and the way we have started leading our lives these days.
If you can support people with depression please do, or else please do not make it worse for them. It is an humble request to everyone out there to save lives by being informed about the problem people face. Your careful concern goes a long way in solving most of the issues associated with this mental health situation.

Yes, and not only this word. Sometimes I was really surprised how much of the stuff on similar topics can be called psychology. Some guys type stress but mean just light anxiety disorder and vice versa
Thats right, attaching every day activities with such a thing is very wrong.... n misleading on soo many different levels :)
They just put words like sausages on a market
I completely agree. Most people who don't suffer from it, don't understand this. My mother just always tells me to be happy... But it isn't that easy. I was diagnosed with bi-polar depression and I have very manic episodes (both highs and lows). I just posted a blog on how my husband and boys help me through not only my depression, but the hard times I am having right now! I ended the blog with information on suicide prevention for any who may need it. I will post it to the above link! Thank you for explaining this so well. You did a great job!
Also bipolar... I find it absurd and amusing how often and casually people throw out medical terminology that is waaaaay off base for what they're describing. I thought I have having blood sugar/pre-diabetic symptoms because of family medical history; turns out I'm a rapid cycling bipolar that has partial seizures... @rockchickjen, I've been looking into the correlation between bipolar and epilepsy (some stuff I browsed even mentioned bipolar possibly being a form of epilepsy) but the brain is so complex it's hard to pinpoint, but I'll let you know what I find :)
Really? Wow... I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the info @wednesdaymiller!
I tell people this most times that depression is not just some mood change, probably due to some daily life challenges, it goes far beyond that, it is a mental disorder, with over 350 million people worldwide suffering from it, so people should not,,, never wish to be depressed.
Exactly, people are misinformed and depression is like the most common word these days.... it all doesn mean the same :)
