My first Shift as a Crisis Counselor with Crisis Text Line

I recently finished my training to become a Crisis Counselor for Crisis Text Line and today was my first shift. I decided to sign up for the midnight to 2:00 AM shift because they get a lot of texters during those hours and I want to help as much as I can.

I was really nervous but I had notes from my training and I referred to them as needed. I talked to 4 people total and the conversations went well and by the time we were done talking they all said they felt better.

There are so many people in the world that are going through horrible problems. I know I can't fix everything for them (especially in a text conversation) but I hope I help at least a little just by being there to listen and provide support. We all need someone we can talk to but a lot of people don't have anyone like that in their life. I'm very fortunate to have a great group of friends that are always there for me when I need them. :)

If you're interested in being a Crisis Counselor for CTL you can sign up on their website but you have to give 2 references, pass a background check, and then go through 36 hours of training. But it's SO worth it. It feels great to help people that are in need.

My next shift is tomorrow night. Wish me luck. :)

Wow @kristyleann that is amazing! First of all, thank you. I personally value this type of work so much and for you to volunteer to do this is taking it to another level. Secondly, it's so true - most of the time we just need someone to listen. It doesn't even matter what was said most of the time, just that we were heard. I do this a lot with webcam journaling and found it to be incredibly effective. I'll turn on my webcam and start recording my thoughts and feelings. Although I don't share these recordings, just the simple knowing that I am being heard by something (the webcam and myself) is enough to feel much much better.

Go you @kristyleann! And thanks for sharing :) I'd love to hear your thoughts about my recent post as it might help you with future conversations you have on your crisis support journey: These Three Words Will Instantly Change How You Perceive Your Life

Webcam journaling is a really good idea. I might try that myself. I used to write in a journal but I got away from it a few years ago...I've been meaning to start again though.

And I checked out your post and left a comment and upvoted it. I think it's really great advice. :)
