Jim Brownlow (right) of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Union) was the son of the 17th Governor of Tennessee, Parson Brownlow.

While countering a Confederate force led by Major General Joseph Wheeler's men, who were attempting to inflict damages on Union railroads, Jim nearly lost his life from gunshot wounds received at Franklin, Tennessee.

Jim was then sent to the home of Dr. Daniel Bonaparte Cliffe. It was at this home, while he was recovering, where he met his future wife, Belle (left.)
