Welcome coffee aficionados! Today I'm excited to share with you a personal favorite from The Brad and Cheri Show: an Aromatic Orange Cardamom Cold Brew Coffee. This concoction is a delight for the senses, marrying the rich depth of coffee with the bright zestiness of orange and the exotic hint of cardamom. Let's make cold brew magic happen, without any bitterness and perfectly customizable to your taste!
Ingredients:
- 3 cups coarse ground coffee (a bold roast or espresso blend is preferred)
- 10 cups cold water
- 1 teaspoon cardamom
- Zest of 1 orange, alternatively 20 drops of doTERRA wild orange oil
Equipment:
- Large container for brewing
- Second container for the finished cold brew
- Mesh strainer
- Coffee filter
- Zester (if using fresh orange)
- Stirring spoon or spatula
Instructions:
1. In a large container, combine 3 cups of coarse ground coffee with 10 cups of cold water. The coffee should be ground coarsely, similar to breadcrumbs, to ensure proper extraction.
2. Add 1 teaspoon of cardamom to the mixture. If you're using fresh orange zest, use your zester to remove the zest of one whole orange and add it to the container. Alternatively, you can use 20 drops of doTERRA wild orange oil for a burst of flavor.
3. Stir the mixture well to ensure that all coffee grounds are fully saturated with water.
4. Place a lid on the container, but it doesn't need to be airtight. Allow the mixture to steep at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours, though 12 hours is often sufficient.
5. After the steeping time has passed, set up your straining area with the second container, a mesh strainer, and a coffee filter to catch the grounds.
6. Stir the brew and begin pouring the mixture through the prepared strainer into the second container. This may need to be done in stages, depending on the amount of coffee and the size of the filtrating setup.
7. Allow the coffee to drip through the filter slowly. This process can take a while, so feel free to attend to other tasks as the coffee strains.
8. Once all the coffee has been strained, transfer the cold brew concentrate into a storage container and refrigerate. The cold brew will be good for at least two weeks in the fridge.
---
Prep Time: 10 minutes (plus 12-24 hours for steeping)
Cook Time: 20 minutes to 1.5 hours for straining
Total Time: 12 to 25 hours (including steeping and straining)
Servings: This recipe yields approximately 9 cups of cold brew concentrate.
Cooking Tips:
- Feel free to dilute the cold brew with additional water if it's too strong for your liking.
- Instead of discarding the used coffee grounds, consider adding them to your compost or using them as fertilizer for your plants.
