Walk With Me to See a Humble Traditional Market in Pante Ceureumen, Aceh

in #walkwithme7 years ago (edited)

Life in rural areas is generally far from fancy. Everything looks simple and humble. Houses, clothes, and daily routines are just plain and simple.

Walk with me to see a humble traditional market in Pante Ceureumen, Aceh Barat, Indonesia. Like other traditional markets in Aceh which are far from the city center, the market in Pante Ceureumen is only open once a week on a day called ‘market day’. So no wonder if this tradisional market is very busy and alive.

Merchants sell their stuff on the ground with only tarpaulins or mats on it, under tarpaulines which are supported by bamboo poles. Other merchants are luckier to be able to put their stuff beneath the simple huts with old wooden poles and sago palms roof. Some huts begin to tilt because they are just very old. Some other sellers are even more fortunate to be able to sell under zinc roofed buildings. The rest sell their goods without any protection from the sun.

What to Buy?

At a glance, this market looks simple and nothing is really special, but that does not discourage the spirit of sellers and buyers in trading. This is because there are so many things are offered here. Being only once a week, sellers from distant places come here carrying merchandises that could not be found in this area. These types of merchants generally do not sell things in a certain place or shop, but move around depending on where there is a market day.

Goods being sold here are generally vegetables, spices, and some other kitchen needs.

Various kinds of fish as a source of protein for Acehnese are easily found here. Large fish can be cut into pieces by the sellers. This service is free so that buyers have no trouble cleaning and cutting large fish.

Want to buy a bucket, plates, or a broom? Don’t worry, on market day we will meet with vendors of glassware and plastic housewares. These merchants are not tired of promoting their wares in a big, loud voice.

Mau cari timba, piring, sapu?

Are you running out soaps or cosmetics? No problem, they are available here.

Feeling Hungry?

We will normally feel hungry after going around the market and do some shopping. No need to rush home to eat. Market day is also a favorite day for food vendors. Let's try the most popular Acehnese cuisine, noodle! I tried instant noodles which was cooked with Acehnese noodle spices. Mixed with eggs, vegetables, and served with crackers, hmm .... delish!

If noodle is not on your diet, you can eat a variety of traditional cakes made directly in front of our eyes. It is definitely so much fun. So, do visit a traditional market once in a while and feel the simple and humble atmosphere there!

And yet this is all we require to live. As it is said, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Greetings from a city dweller working towards a more frugal, humble, rural lifestyle! Fantastic post!

'simplicity is the ultimate sophistication'. Such a beautiful saying! Living in big cities is mostly tiring, I believe. Good luck on your way to live a simple life in rural areas, @maven360. Hope you find more peace in your life :). Thanks for dropping a comment.
