After a somewhat anemic week of military philosophy and science, I was about ready to call it quits. However, I was visited by an excellent tome that knocked me out of my socks. This one is one part autobiographical account of warfare in Afghanistan, and one part testosterone-infused philosophical treatise on the meaning of life and combat.
The protagonist is a videographer for the US Army in Afghanistan, and explains both his relationships with the unit, as well as the events that happen. It's a gut-wrenching experience where you feel the pain, shock, boredom and insight that the men gain through their escapades. A story where the Americans are slaughtering a cow stuck in barbed wire is a down moment, showing how exciting that life is.
The point is hammered home rather forcefully that it's not PTSD that troubles veterans, it's the lack of adventure, adrenaline and unity of purpose (not to mention camaradarie) that forces them to drink, fight and cheat. It's sobering to think that there's a "High" life that these people lead that the other type of living pales in comparison to.
I'm incredibly happy this book exists. I understand it, respect it and I hope to one day achieve that high. BANGER OF THE WEEK.
