Technology should have taught the worlds navy's that they are an anachronism when the HMS Sheffield was hit by an Argentinian Exocet missile during the 1982 Falklands War. Common sense says there are only two types of ocean going vessels, submarines and targets. Yet, navy's persist and new floating coffins are built.
Missile tech is at the point where human flown war planes are reaching the end of their days and drones are the natural replacement. Lasers will change the situation once again when missiles and drones become their target.
This ratcheting up of technology will eventually produce a situation where offensive weaponry won't reach its intended target the majority of the time IF launched from earth. Space based weapons are logically the next step if not already developed in secret.
The barely humans in the military won't be needed much longer.
