Walk in the past,

in #wednesdaywalk4 years ago (edited)

This is my entry to #wednesdaywalk created by @tattoodjay. Time is slipping by so fast each week that I feel that some of my time was snatched away by a time-thief or time-swallower, a creature who eats time as a dessert. I really have to be more vigilant as some of these creatures could just slip through the random portal which could pop up under the new moon night.

To make up for losing some time, I had to go for a walk in the past so that I could live on time past so making it double time as my compensation. It was about a few days before the ending of the lockdown in the country. I knew that would be my last opportunity to walk in the past quietly before the bombardment of fuzzy vibes of the ‘liberated’ crowd to enjoy their liberty after three months’ lockdown.

I kept on thinking about my Thai grandmother who used to have a house near an old Palace near the river. Then, my mother’s family had to move to a new house near the famous temple called Wat Boworn which was the official residence of the previous spiritual leader of the Buddhist monks in the country. When I was a kid, I remembered my mother taking me to see my grandmother at her nice wooden house with wild garden a few times. I regretted that my mother did not get along with her mother so there was a big gap in my sense of belonging and cultural roots of my grandmother side.

IMG_0263.JPG

I never knew my grandfather as he died when my mother was very young. She told me that he was a soldier who died on his duty. Many years later, I met my mother’s long lost cousin by chance, they started telling me about my mothe as a little girl and that my grandfather was a policeman! My mother seemed to have kept lots of secret about her family background and I always wonder why she never told us about her close relatives.

IMG_0259.JPG

IMG_0260.JPG

I guessed it was because she could be ashamed that all her relatives and cousins have become very rich and successful business tycoons. They told me that as a little girl, my mother was very proud and looked down upon her cousins. That was a very absorbing and mind boggling experience for me, being surrounded by elderly relatives who were so keen to know about me and my mother. I never told my mother what we talked about as I did not want to upset her in her old age.

IMG_0270.JPG

So, this walk along the old district of Bangkok brought back all these snippets of my meeting with relatives on my mother’s family tree. My effort to find my grandmother’s house had failed as I got lost in the small lanes in Banglampoo area. This used to be the area where old wealthy families lived about a hundred years ago. This was because there were so many minor palaces in this area. So, the first modern shopping area and best restaurants, entertainments such as Thai boxing stadium and horse racing track were to be found in this district.

The old city wall could still be seen in some parts of the old road in front of Wat Boworn. The architectural design of the row old shop-houses was very timeless classic to me; these were built during the reign of King Rama V, just over a hundred years ago. The design of buildings during that period had a mixture of European influence as there were some Italian and British engineers and architects working as staff of the government. Lots of the building materials had to be imported from Europe and Singapore.

IMG_0276.JPG

IMG_0278.JPG

IMG_0277.JPG

Several buildings inside the temple look strangely out of place as they look too Westernised to be inside a Buddhist temple. It was rather nice walking quietly along the old road where my grandmother used to walk by almost everyday of her life while she was living in that old teak house. I remembered her house as being typical Thai house with a separate kitchen. Those trees in her garden were so tall and dense like a jungle of fruit trees.

IMG_0283.JPG

I remembered a noisy commotion about someone finding a cobra in the garden. It’s a shame when I heard that she moved to a new house in a nearby province of Nontaburi making it very difficult for a kid like me to cross over the distance to get closer to my grandmother. My mother never encouraged her children to visit our grandmother; I wondered why and forgot about the whole thing.

IMG_0284.JPG

Now I yearned to find out all the answers to my silent questions since my childhood. I did not dare to break the peaceful rhythm of family life and I later regretted for not confronting my mother while she’s much younger. It’s tough being parents with a large family and lots of responsibilities. I had a much easier life among the whole bunch even though I was the least financially accomplished among them. People often said I looked the happiest among all my cousins and relatives. It’s a blessing to be satisfied with what one has and be self-sufficient most of the time.

IMG_0286.JPG

This walk in the past brought me to a very old local community whose ancestors had been living by the canal over a hundred year. I stopped there for a rest after failing to locate my grandmother’s old house. Our discussion about the remaining wooden houses over a hundred years brought me back to the time of King Rama V.

IMG_0324.JPG

The elderly gentleman told me that I was sitting on the area where there used to be a historical pier. There were several old brick steps which King Rama V got off from his boat to walk across the road so that he could enter Wat Boworn as soon as possible. This was the shortest route to get to the temple; and the King was a frequent visitor to this temple. Now I knew why I was so attracted to this area and Wat Boworn. The vibes of this area and temple must have very harmonious frequencies from all the visits of the King and his prayers including merit making ceremonies during his countless unofficial visits.

IMG_0338.JPG

I was so stunned to discovered this unwritten part of Thai history which were passed down through generations of local people in this area. It was a shame that the authority did not try to persevere this special historic site but chose to dismantle those old brick steps and built a wall instead. The gentleman told me that local people rushed to this site to pick up pieces of brick to be kept in their shrine rooms at home. They considered these pieces of bricks which had been walked on by their beloved King were very sacred and special bits of history.

History is so important.. To know where & and how we got to where we are now...😊

So glad you also think the same way. But my family did not understand my quest for our past family trees. I could see the links between various things that occurred in our family having their roots in our past family’s experiences.

It’s very nostalgic trying to imagine how these ancestors might feel in their days.

Yes totally agree...😊

The old buildings are very well-preserved. The walkway along the canal look so interesting and inviting. The dogs are super cute. It's an endearing sight that the owner was collecting recyclables with her dogs.😄

Thank you very much. Glad you enjoy these photos. When you next visit Bangkok, be sure to visit the old part of the city!

Bangkok has everything, from modern buildings to the traditional ones

Yep! We are lucky that the Second World War bombings did not destroy all the old buildings!!

Hope you’ll come to visit one day!
