I think it's interesting that the demarcation between private and public land is the high-tide mark. That reminds me of the '12 mile circle' border between Delaware and New Jersey, where Delaware owns the Delaware River separating the two states up to the low-tide mark of the NJ shore. It's kinda neat to see on a map.
