Helloooo guys! This is taingera and today’s topic is going to be “Prescription weed for the munchies: Marinol” Before I talk about this topic, I have to throw out a disclaimer that I am not a medical doctor and these are just my opinions. You should only take this blog content for educational purposes only. Let’s begin.
If you ever smoked weed before, you would know that it gives you a strong desire to eat food or what people call the “munchies.” Marijuana aka weed, has an active ingredient called tetrahydrocannabinol. Wow, that’s a mouthful. We’ll just call it THC for short. THC is responsible for a myriad of things including euphoria and appetite stimulation. Drug companies found this to be very useful in anorexic AIDS patients and trademarked a drug called Marinol, which is essentially a synthetic oral form of THC.
Because of it’s abuse potential, Marinol is a scheduled III drug. Yes, it also has other FDA indications as well, such as chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and an off label use for obstructive sleep apnea. But let’s be serious, if you’re prescribed Marinol, it most likely would be for the “munchies.” There are too many other drugs for nausea and vomiting that prescribers can write for that don’t involve jumping through hoops like writing for a scheduled III drug like Marinol. The funny thing is that marijuana is still federally illegal. I’m not a big advocate for marijuana but if there are drug companies that allow Marinol and Syndros to be perfectly legal, why can’t the federal government just legalize marijuana and control it under a schedule?
