Many of us came here to move away from a controlled site or mainstream social media. Many of us value Freedom, because crypto tends to appeal to people who value Freedom.
Have you ever noticed though many of us want Freedom, it can be a challenge sometimes to let others have it?
Sometimes when a person holds an opinion, and I disagree, I want to tell myself that the person is an asshole or wrong, sometimes both. Likely they aren't though, likely they just see the situation differently.
I want the complainers to stop complaining, but when I am frustrated I complain too. Some days I want to make a no complaining rule, other days, I want the freedom to complain.
I was thinking and talking a lot about the downvote vs. flag issue today and most of us do have opinions on this topic and yet, it isn't that anyone is wrong we just have a different view, different triggers, and different experiences. I kept having to remind myself that I don't get to tell others how to think or how to react.
There is a group of people who I enjoy who often take the hard side of flags and they feel abused. Yet they are the same people who run into these problems everywhere they go. They tell themselves they are free thinkers and more mature, but many of them are just looking for a fight and would continue to escalate until they got one, no matter what the rules are. Yet, I enjoy some of their opinions and interesting perspectives. I can't decide how they view flags they are free to react as they like.
I wanted to blame some assholes for our differences of opinion, but I guess in their eyes, I am the asshole. Some want downvotes, some don't want them at all, and there are perfectly valid reasons for both opinions if I am honest with myself. Yet, I am also okay with making a decision knowing some will not like it. If we made the other decision some still wouldn't like it... It would just be a different group.
I want to be free to say what I want and to use my stake as I wish with both upvotes and downvotes. I want you to be free to do the same.
As I watch people on this platform agree and disagree and be critical and helpful, it is challenging to remember we are just a group of people in a new situation with varying degrees of power and we are trying to sort out rules for the community, we are setting a culture and sometimes I don't care for it.
As I sort out my day, I am reminding myself that moods, opinions and discussions are just that. I don't want to be stubborn, unkind or an asshole. Often though I am.
And so are many of you.. Assholes.
In order to have my Freedom, you get to have Freedom too.

I feel like there's probably a way to have the best of both worlds. Something that can allow for community clean up, but limits bullying, but honestly in terms of priorities, IMO that's in the back somewhere.

Normal human behavior... They are assholes, so I am gonna be an asshole and then everyone is an asshole and nobody is happy lol. Why should I be nice when everyone is an asshole right? Why should I give others upvotes when everyone upvotes themselves and nobody else? I should be an asshole an upvote myself too. lol and it all comes crashing down. Be the leader and stand for what you believe, even if it makes people upset. Be nice and do the right thing even if everyone else is tresspassing against you.

we have all our mistakes, some less, some more..
I have nothing against downvotes for spam, plagiarism, abusive content.
But I have something against downvotes only because the content of a post is against our opinions.
And here are some big assholes with much Steempower who abuse it.
I have no idea what's their drive to do that, perhaps it makes them horny 😅
There should be a possibility to stop them.
That's the dark side of our online world, in real life most of these people cannot look into others eyes, face to face is running out of popularity.
Anyway, have a great day and the decision to change the name from flag to downvote is absolutely ok.

Disagree doesn't imply jealousy. For example if you take all the free samples from the sample person at Costco, is the person who calls you out jealous?
The reason it is pending for a week is so people have time to disagree. In reality it rarely happens except to the worst of the worst.

I actually wrote about downvotes today too. I downvoted some blockchain leech because he turned a bid I was on into negative ROI (his dumb bid cost him more than my downvote). He whined and lied but then a whitenight came in and told me I need to offer more constructive criticism than simply saying 'Improve your post'.

Not all people who flag are assholes, not all assholes flag. Sometimes they do and are though. :)
If more of us exhibited this presence of mind and were able to discern when they are contradicting their own beliefs, I think this world would be so fucking different. I'm not at all surprised to see this level of awareness coming from you.
I feel most times I contradict me myself. I was writing a post about inconsistency yesterday which is yet to finish. Like you, most days I feel people complain too; talk about steem too; are overly optimistic about the future of steem that they turn a blind eye to the challenges we face; some people just want more steem at the expense of the platform, but at the same time I exhibit this same behavior to some degree.
It's a constant struggle reminding myself that people have the luxury of doing or saying what they want, so do I, even though my behavior can be inconsistent when compared with the things I say.

I think this is a great summary for what often goes on and is misinterpreted as passion of their thoughts. Some will do anything to support their view and often leads to the behaviors you describe. The reality is that we will never be one sided on things as it would be boring if we were as well!
