I was just at mother’s day brunch with my mom and apropos of this, she lamented that she used to believe that this country is a meritocracy, but she’s now accepted that hard work and merit will get you nowhere without rich parents, even beyond having connections. I work my butt off and I’m beginning to think that she’s right, at least 99.9% of the time. At least here most people are only really judged on the quality of their work rather than familial background. It may not line up 100% with monetary rewards but it’s certainly closer to a meritocracy than “real life.” And that’s not even taking into account what “real life” is in other parts of the world where you wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of monetary success without some serious luck if you don’t get a head start from birth. This community and the bigger movement it’s part of has the chance to change the paradigm. It may not still be a success 10 years from now but it’s an early step into a new online economy.
