After reading so many posts about whales, dolphins and minnows... and then reading even more.
One would hope that everyone gets the point by now.
Then to go through thousands of complaints and posts of how they make nothing and crap is being upvoted... Well I'm just going to say one thing GROW UP... life is UNFAIR... I'm 19 and I live in Africa. Nothing is ever perfect! If everyone thinks their posts are so amazing, well then, guess what, no body is going to get any votes...
Now on the bright side
Well steemit is new, very new and still is in beta----> this means that there is still a lot of things that will be changed and I'm sure that they will put a few whaling ships out there just to make things "fair".
The site and the way it works will be changed countless times, I can promise you that. Once more as more and more uses flood in, new problems appear and boy do I feel sorry for the people having to update and re-work the platform.
For all those mates working on the platform... a huge GOOD LUCK!
Cut them some slack people. They have just been working round the clock on the hack and other issues and still getting people their accounts back.
I am sure they will sort out this issue next as many of you users are unhappy.
I'm positively sure that they don't want you to be unhappy. They could be already working on a solution to this whale problem right now. Lets not drive the programmers crazy... you know we kind of "do" need them.
Probably how you are feeling
I'm sure all the writers out there that don't get votes feel like this and well it is understandable. There are so many posts getting loads and you might really need the $$$, but most of the people on here do or they wouldn't be here just yet. Lets not go crazy and loose our heads. Sit back and relax a little, you don't want to provoke the whales or bite the hand that will feed you.
You can't blame them
I personally know of all the spam and junk posts which there are out there. This covers your amazing posts and hides them from these Whales. Most of the whales have a job and are working they can't spend 3 hours looking through it all to find your post. On top of that they only have a certain amount of voting power, meaning that they can't vote for everyone. I personally have taken on the job of sorting through the junk to look for really good posts. It takes forever! Here's a suggestion: try look for 2 post that isn't yours that is really good that will make a difference in your life. You will see its not that easy. BUT I do believe that all this will change.
THEY are not monsters
Once upon a time these whales were where we are right now. They are human believe it or not, they do have feeling and they do care. They want change just as much as we do and want to help us out. They just don't have the time so let the programmers sort the problem out. Before the whales are forced to not vote... then no one gets any money
Think before you do things.
The minnows can help each other by upvoting good content. A lot of upvotes will get a post into the "hot" tab, where someone with more power can increase the payout. And of course if you have upvoted before the whales, you get a curation award.
For an explanation of how the tabs work, see https://steemit.com/steemit/@candy49/explaining-the-tabs-on-the-top-right-hand-corner
Yes if the minnows were just willing to come together they could make a huge difference instead of whining about it and trying to kill the people who give the most money on an upvote
Yeah... everyone needs to keep in mind that the first payout happened less than a month ago. Everyone's still building up their holdings. Things will get "better", it just needs time for the system (and its users) to mature a bit and really learn how to make it work to its full potential.
They are in fact updating it next week Tuesday to help provide a solution
Yeah, I read through craig-grant's post about the hard fork a bit. I didn't pay a lot of attention but I like the 12 hour cycle with 30 day window instead of 24 hours. Hopefully that will encourage more interaction and not random money-grabbing posts. In general I think the stream just goes by way too fast. I don't know if I'm just speaking out of familiarity with it, but I feel the site would be easier to manage and maybe more welcoming if the tags worked more like subreddits. There are obviously plans for some kind of "following" page, but being able to choose between a front page that lists everything and just a selection of topics or users you want to follow would be fantastic.
Well I agree the 12h cycle doesn't leave the posts up for people in other times zones making things a little tricky. I to have though of was in which they can improve the site and well its going to be hard. Most users are American so those posting at times they can't see aren't going to get as many votes and this might lead to further problems and "unfair" to others
exactly... in one month when i launched websites i had maybe like 10 users... going to 30,000 users this quickly has some additional challenges that no one can see other than the developers. i run a website with over 1 million uniques a month so i know
I will admit, I was getting frustrated the first week or two after July 4th because I couldn't seem to make anything. I finally realized late last week/earlier this week that I just needed to be patient and use the site. Now it's working out well for me. I've started a power down that's making me regular money each week without any work and I'm gaining more interest per week than the payout. Plus, I'm still commenting/curating etc so I'm earning SP and SBD on top of the interest I have coming in. It'll only get better as time goes on and more people will be able to pay others for useful comments. Your upvote on this comment alone got me .70 or something as it is, just imagine what it will be like in a few more weeks, months, YEARS.
The more time we actually invest in trying to understand this platform and how it is run the better our posts will do in terms of $
People need to realize that the whales benefited because they invested early. You had the same opportunity as them and they serve as an important part of the ecosystem. Money will eventually redistribute over time and if you are willing to stake your own money and buy steem online, you should be fine.
On top of that you will also become a whale to the people who join after you and to those who join much later. Think of this as a company and shares in it . They have been here longer and spent more time here and even money. So we can't just kill them. If we really wanted to make money in here we should invest some of our own, this will even speed up the process of you gaining more money.
The platform is so new that I think people are having a hard time adjusting to the dynamics here. I agree that cooler heads need to prevail, and also that the end of beta will make Steemit seem so different from now. For me, I would've been doing this for free elsewhere, but now I do it knowing I'm helping to shape and create this revolutionary thing the devs produced.
Keep typing OP!
exactly. my favourite thing about steemit i can just post whatever i want and it might get flagged but not deleted. this is what i like about it the most. Who is Facebook or any other platform to tell me what i can post or not.
I just give it time. I think the basic framework of how it works now is fantastic.
If you post anything on facebook do you receive anything for it... NO and now you are getting something for what you post . It might not be much but keep trying and testing new things.
from a guy running a huge community myself:
there are so many details involved especially if you want to create a self-governing community and making sure its all fast enough and reliable enough. I have huge respect for the guys that started this platform. Its a massive amount of work. When I heard this would be a scam I told them its impossible to put so much work into it and so much love to just let it end for the money. Doesn't make any sense. I used to be 90% facebook 10% twitter. now i am 40% twitter 40% steem and 20% facebook with my online publishing time. One tremendous advantage that steem has over facebook and twitter or quora is that its extremely well indexed within google. Facebook is only well indexed for page names you create but not for the individual posts.. twitter only for profiles but the individual posts not at all. So anything that you put on here on steemit will in time get much more google traffic
There is a reason why the stopped the sign ups. I believe it has to do with the site not being able to hold so many users. I don't think that they predicted so many users joining so fast.
Great reality check for the whiners.
I personally can't stand people which whine. There are people out there doing worse than them and haven't complained at all.
I believe that we need to stress the importance of commenting. It will create a better community and I've gotten ten times more up-votes commenting than writing submissions. Sure, we need both but right now there are too many submissions and not enough community interaction.
I never even thought about that. I guess that is because I have never had a commentary/reply group like this before. All i knew before was that there is way too much spam out there. I like it that you can upvote on peoples replies.
Steemit Quotes Of The Day –
Sometimes life is tough. 諦めない
How about superman for now? ^o^
Good post gavvet, thank for share with us, but in my opinion all things need limits and whales at moment have not
There is a limit to their power quite literally if they didn't have a power limit then everyone would make a killing. Also these whales do have friends and some of the members they are voting for have done things for this platform and this is a way in which they can reward those. I must agree with you that the whales do need a bit more of a limit but at this time trying to find good posts to vote on are really hard as there is a lot of spam and junk everywhere. We also can't stop our whales... they are whales for a reason. They have spent a lot of time and effort to get to where they are right now and we will to be there one day. Remember that we are one of the first groups in and there will be many more to come to this platform.
Good point, lets see what happen when we get the 100k users, really it is an really real time experiment
Yes everything so going to change. In a months time steemit might not even look or work the same way. I have been here through some major changes
haha, I just saw the new tag category "whales" and thought like... "are you serious?"
I clicked on it, found your blog and loved it! Thank you! :-)
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Good post. You are correct too.
do u think having established authors publish ur post helps?
In what way?
Seriously?
Yes it does help. But it ends up helping both you and the person who posts it for you
Great post yet again @gavvet!!!
My Vote do count.
why is dragonslayer post on your account? kinda confused...
It is an author promotion. So I give my dad the post he puts it up and we split what is made on it. It is a form of networking authors together.
I see, cool. keep it up.
The whales can feed is one day. Imagine life without them. We would hardly make any money without them here.
