Seems like it's been a while since I posted about whiskey and cigars..... As whiskeys go, Rye whiskey for me is a little on the sour side..... not that there's anything wrong with that of course.
BULLEIT RYE
For my taste, Bulleit Rye is less sour than others and has a nice rounded flavor in that there's nice hints of sweet fruits like apricots as well as spicy notes akin to but not exactly like nutmeg and a sweet, Bourbon style, finish.
BOLIVAR CORONAS JUNIOR
Bolivar cigars are, to me, a fine example of how people have different tastes. More than any other brand of cigar, other cigar smokers will tell me that the Bolivar is too strong and yet they will honk down a Nicaraguan maduro as if its heaven's gift to cigar smokers (they're not, and I haven't found a Nicaraguan maduro that's even remotely comparable to a good Cuban cigar). The Coronas Junior is a typical example of Bolivar's robust yet smooth flavour, robust in that there's complexity without being overbearing and smooth in that there's a pleasant bittersweet after taste. The size of this cigar is good if you have a whole box because 1 is not enough.
PAIRING
I would have expected the sourness of the Rye to attack the bitterness of the cigar but it didn't. Whilst it wasn't a great pairing, the flavours didn't really mix at all, each keeping pretty much to themselves.
