The last days I was busy setting up a seed node for steem. These nodes allow witnesses to get all blockchain data and let them catch up quicker. This means the more seed nodes there are the easier it is for new witnesses to get started and so witnesses who host a seed node have the network in mind when doing so.
To provide the best service possible, my seed node has the same specs as my witness node. 32 GB of RAM and a lot of power to spare. I plan to host it for the long term and hope that shows with the node's performance.

- 32gb DDR3 ECC RAM
- 4c/8t Intel Xeon CPU E3-1245V2
- 2x 3TB HDD
- 1gbit/s network (20TB b/w)

I am currently not doing regular witness updates because I am busy building things for steem and there are other great witnesses doing updates on what is happening. If you want my opinion to something witness related, please get in touch.
I also don't plan to engage too much in the politics of being a steem witness. I know you need to ask all kinds of whales for their vote to actually get higher up in the ranks. And my plan is to do good work for the ecosystem and have happy steemers campaign for me. Nothing shows good work like someone else saying I am worth voting for.

I have always been in support of you @reggaemuffin.
However I wanted to know that is it necessary to be a Witness to start a Seed Node and if not could you make a post about it.
I am kind of interested in Learning about it.
Coming to steemit has really piked my interests a lot.
Everyone can start a seed node if they want. Just be aware that it doesn't give you anything, it just costs a lot for the server :)
If you want to setup one, I can recommend @someguy123 and his steem docker setup. He has really detailed posts about how to set up a seed node.

Witnesses are like the government of steem and decide where the journey goes, so voting for the right witnesses allows you to change steem to the direction you like.

Wow, I didn't know it actually needs a server spec to run as a seed node @reggaemuffin ! I have been scouting for a server for my office myself and even my webpage for my internal office does not need a high ram as it is needed.
I noticed it doesn't require a high graphics card. I do not quite understand how STEEM producing works but I guess it is not relying on GPU then?

The hardest part is storing the Blockchain and that can get quite big. I like to have the whole chain in memory so my server is beefy.
Steem does not need mining so cpu/gpu time is minimal. It does need almost zero latency, so using ram to save time can be crucial
