You've got it right @socky - it's in the markets out there in the world of exchanges that STEEM gets its value relative to other currencies.
The more STEEM gets exposed on the exchanges for how useful it is as a currency, the greater the demand for it will be and the higher it's value relative to other currencies, whether fiat, crypto, metals, or whatever!
