What I've learned while tinkering with a node is that Witnesses do a ton of work for the steem blockchain.
There are witnesses working around the clock to verify your transactions and keep the blockchain running.
Most of us don't give our Witnesses the love they deserve, not because we don't appreciate them, but because we may not realize how much hard work it really is.
I finally decided to dive in because I really want to be a working member of this great platform. Content creation is rad but getting my hands dirty maybe even more fulfilling.
Right now I'm in full research and study mode.
When the time is right and I've put in the work I'll be launching a witness node.

howdy there @happymoneyman! this sounds really good and noble sir. The Witnesses aren't a volunteer position are they, with all that work? how do they get paid and who pays them? is there a corporate office somewhere?
haha well actually a lot of witnesses are "volunteer" to some extent.
I think if you get voted into the top 80 witnesses or somewhere around there you can break even on server costs. The top 21 witnesses make a decent profit and they respect the position as a full time job. Many of the lower level witnesses just do it as a way to add to the community. I'm going into it with a beginners mind and we'll see where it ends up. top 80 fingers crossed

and as Steemit grows I assume there will be even more needed.

@happymoneyman Believe it or not you are the main reason I'm not panic selling to get out. Watching your EOS interviews and learning you are so enthusiastic about this platform has kept me on an even keel for sticking it out here.
I'm sure there will be some changes coming and there should be. There's so much to know regarding how it actually works. But since you don't HAVE TO KNOW much to use STEEMIT many of us have never really looked into it

I feel the panic too sometimes. I try to take the signal that others are probably feeling the same... that means do the opposite.
I think we have a future with dpos. I try to stay open the idea that crypto moves quick, so I'm not a maximalist. I'll be first to jump ship if things are going down, but I think we are early in something big.
who knows if it's eos, steem, or something not invented. the important part is we keep our eyes open.

There are more than million steemians. I'm sure atleast 0.8 million people don't know who are witnesses and remaining people don't know their importance and they don't even use their 30 votes. Even I have my 25 votes ramaining and don't know whom to vote.

Three things....
First of all good luck in your new endeavor. I admire the amount of preparation you appear to be putting into this, I am sure this part of your style has helped lead to your current success.
Second, thank you for sharing your sources of information, I am also coming to Steemit from another venue and I am learning all I can and the more I learn, the more impressed I am with this platform and developers who created it. My hats off to @dan , @ned and others I don't know. While I may never be a witness, understanding how this platform works appears to be essential to success, so I appreciate every nugget of information.
Third and last, I like how you model how a happy, helpful and positive person can be successful on Steemit. You show we can use this platform to help others as a way to be successful ourselves. This is one of the most important characteristics of Steemit that drew me into the platform. We can talk about helping others as a way of life, but we all need to eat and that sometimes leads to "bad behavior". This platform contains multiple streams of income we can earn from helping others or just showing appreciation for the contributions of others. I know that some may consider that self-serving, but it sure is better then hurting others to benefit ourselves and in general helps elevate the caliber of our behavior. We are all humans with faults and weaknesses, but I think parts of this platform help reinforce some of our better characteristics.
