COMMUNICATION IN MARRIAGE.

Text:

“Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. - John 4:9.

Comment:

In the story of the conversation between Jesus Christ and the woman of Samaria we learn that the woman was surprised that Christ spoke with her since the Jews would not condescend to do so. But for the discussion with her, Christ would not have been able to point out to her the error in their method of worship. The danger in the lack of communication between the two nations could thus be seen. How could they have been won over to the true way without Christ preaching to them? How could their superstitions and doctrinal errors have been known without her talking with Christ? The benefit of communication could therefore be seen. In marriage proper communication could only be achieved by:

  1. Helping the married couple resolve their own current conflict; and 2. Helping them develop better communication skills so that they can resolve future conflicts without the help of a counsellor.

Many couples feel reluctant to seek counsel or even to admit that their marriage has reached the point where they need help. They harbour the feeling that they have failed spiritually and socially and so have to endure the pain rather than subject themselves to counselling. They fear the exposure of their experiences. Communicating takes practice. You cannot legislate it. We have to keep working on the problem of communication in our marriages by God's grace. We must bear in mind the words of Solomon the prophet to wit: “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.” - Proverbs 15:22.
