Turns out the wood was still really wet, so I stopped after roughing out and coated the whole thing with beeswax to slow the drying and keep it from cracking.
Six months to a year and it will be ready for final turning.
I love the contrast between the sapwood and heart wood.
Speaking of beeswax, what does this remind you of?

I like the wood contrast too. I've done similar with scrap purple heart which is almost like maple.
Although turning that with the bark must have been a mess, haha. I always rough trimmed the shape with a bandsaw.

Yeah, the pith was already starting to crack on this. I basically poured molten wax into it.
