Hey y'all! As most of you know, I'm not a huge fan of blogging, but I wanted to take a moment to talk about the upcoming WOO (aka Wrestling Organization Online) Territory Sale.
I know a lot of people are pumped about this sale because it is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a Hive-based game project that is sure to grow like wildfire over time. Investors and future players alike have been excitedly waiting months for their chance, and @wrestorgonline has been doing a great job of hyping us up and answering all our questions with their weekly AMA sessions. They even sponsored a fantastic poster contest that generated sweet entries like this one:
Now, I am not an investor; I haven't the cash! And while I consider myself a future player, that same lack of funds is putting a crimp in that as well. That said, I'm slowly growing my collection by hook and by crook; mostly by winning NFTs and $WOO tokens in their weekly WOO! Jeopardy games.
So if I, personally, am unlikely to benefit much from this land sale, why am I so excited about it?
One simple reason: WOO has heart.
You see, I'm a wrestling fan from way, way back. I'm pushing 50, so I remember characters like the Iron Sheik, the Great Kabuki, and the Ultimate Warrior. I remember announcers like Gordon Solie and "Mean" Gene Okerlund. Saturdays were prime bonding time with my dad, watching characters like these leave it all in the ring.
I haven't watched much in the past decade, because I cut cable TV out of my life roughly 10 years ago. But I have several friends who keep me abreast of the most important happenings.
The realities of wrestling
Now, as some of you who really love wrestling may know, wrestlers are independent contractors. Meaning they're responsible for all their own taxes, insurances, retirement savings, and any of the other "benefits" that most other folks get from their day jobs. There are no holidays, no paid time off, no sick leave, no maternity leave... Hopefully you're beginning to get the picture. They get nothing other than their paycheck.
Now, for mega-stars, this might be fine. But it takes a lot more than a handful of mega-stars to fill all those cards week in and week out. So there are a LOT of poorly-paid wrestlers out there. Back in the day, they might have gotten $50 for a match (or less!). And this situation hasn't improved with the consolidation of all the various local and regional wrestling organizations into the WWE. They're all still contractors who could find their career ended with just one wrong move - be it physical, political (i.e. pissing off the boss man) or financial.
This means that dozens of folks who gave their absolute all to this fantastic form of entertainment are now struggling with the fallout of abusing their bodies for years, and all without niceties like 401ks and health insurance.
But what does that have to do with the "heart" of WOO?
This, my friends, is where the true beauty of WOO shines. They have already partnered with several of these wrestlers; names like Perry Saturn, Terri Runnels, and Raven. And every wrestler they partner with not only gets their own card and character in the forthcoming game; they get a share of the profits of the game. And we're not talking about chump change, either. For example, Perry Saturn was able to pay off a slew of back taxes and keep his house, thanks to this project.
Let me say that again. Wrestling Organization Online is giving back to wrestlers who gave their best years to the sport and art of wrestling. They're doing what Vince McMahon should have been doing all along - taking care of the stars who gave us so many years of great entertainment.
That's what I call heart, and it's why I ❤️ WOO.
