A court in Moscow, Russia, on Monday sentenced him to 15 days in jail on four members of Pussy Riot's protest group that disrupted the 2018 World Cup final. At the French-Croat encounter on Sunday, July 15, 2018, the four members of the punk band broke into the field wearing uniforms fake police.
The incident at the start of the second half of the final was judged as a commendable action. The judge also forbade them attending sporting events for three years.
The four were Veronika Nikulshina, Olga Pakhtusova, Olga Kurachyova and Pyotr Verzilov, the only men.
Kurachyova says their action is meant to promote freedom of speech and condemn FIFA's policies. "It is unfortunate that we are harassing the athletes," he told reporters on Monday.
He continued, "FIFA is involved in unfair games, unfortunately FIFA is a friend of the head of state who is repressing, which violates human rights."
As for Verzilov said the action was also intended to show how "the state, in the form of police, disrupt people's lives".
Three members of Pussy Riot were jailed in 2012 for protesting against Putin in a church. Since then the group has become a symbol of the anti-Kremlin's immediate action.
Croatia defender Dejan Lovren, who pushed male intruders to the side on the pitch, told reporters that the incident had plagued the match at a crucial moment for his team.
The 2018 World Cup final, won by France 4-2, was watched from the stands by Russian President Vladirimir Putin and the presidents of France and Croatia.
