Hey dear Hiveans, first of all I would like to welcome you all to my new post and hope you have a week so far which is full of interesting events! Also today I would like to share something about one of my travel experiences in Greece with you and hope you are able to expand your knowledge.
During my time in Athens, I spent some time at the port of Piraeus, which was already of great importance in the past and is considered one of the most important ports of Greece, which is known as an important link between the mainland and various sea routes. To this day, it's one of the most important ports of Europe and from the location it is a little away from the stressful climate of the big city and this port is very important to transport daily passengers to the Greek islands and there are also some terminals where daily goods from all over the world arrive. Unlike other ports, a large part of Piraeus is privately owned and over half of all shares belong to the Chinese group Cosco Shipping, which is headquartered in Beijing, and in general, it's also an important port for China from a strategic point of view when it comes to the transport of goods.
Cosco is part of the Chinese government and also in other European cities the company owns shares of ports, but Piraeus is the largest and not only the current market is of interest and the Chinese government is investing a lot and planning to expand the business there. Even in earlier times, the harbour was an important component for the development of the economy in Greece and also in mythology there are many legends that revolve around Piraeus and once even gods are said to have stayed here or even were swimming. In addition to these aspects, Piraeus is also very interesting for visitors and there are many opportunities to spend the free time, such as visiting beaches or restaurants, which go hand in hand with an enchanting view.
For me it was important to learn more about the history as well as culture of the port so I decided to visit the Archeological Museum of Piraeus which is open from morning to afternoon and contains an interesting excavation site in addition to a large art collection. A large part of the exhibition consists of finds that were once excavated in the area and it's a rather hidden museum for visitors to Athens, which is why I would rather call it an insider tip which people should not miss! If someone should also be interested in art, you should not miss visiting the art gallery of Piraeus, which is full of breathtaking works of art, but it is important to know that it is slightly different with the opening hours than indicated on the Internet..
When I was there I first stood in front of empty doors and I went to the nearest hotel to ask how it looks with the opening hours, but they didn't know anything specific and I wanted to leave again slightly disappointed until I met a lady who works for the gallery at a small side entrance and she took the time to show me everything and it was a great experience to see all of the the artworks. I also visited the Municipal theatre of Piraeus at least from the outside and partly inside, but you can also see performances there which take place there at regular intervals and in the theatre there is also a bar where visitors can consume drinks or little snacks, however, if you want to see a performance, you should inform yourself in advance.
Many thanks for the visit and I hope you could learn something new about this unique place! I captured these pictures with my Sony Alpha 6000 plus 55-210 mm lens and iPhone 12.
You talked about your time in Athens
How’s the place like?
I’ve seen so many pictures of it and I feel I should visit there someday
It’s a cool place, right?
So I would generally describe Athens as a city that has an important place when it comes to Greek culture. It is a place that especially culture enthusiasts should not miss! But to go into the city in general, it is of course very stressful and sometimes there are also corners that are not very beautiful. There are officially four million people living in the area, but unofficially one million can be added again. Of course, like any other big city, it is extremely hectic, but rich in culture and also diverse. There is also a lot to offer for young people and I would say there is something for everyone. Also the location is very interesting, right by the sea and there are countless possibilities to trace back to the water. If you have any other questions please let me know.
I didn't know that port was so big and China was so deep inside it, usually Europeans don't like to have that much China at home... You are doing a very big tour here!
It is an important trading partner and there are many dependencies, of course Europe is also lucrative in many ways for large investors, which of course varies depending on the location. I’m glad you like my blog and I could take you on a virtual journey, so to speak :)
