READ: Philippians 2:1-11
Key Scripture: And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8)
THOUGHTS
There is that Igbo adage that says that an Idol worshiper must resemble the Idol that he worships. Do you resemble Christ? Can people see you and, even without you informing them that you are a Christian, notice that you are one? St Paul reminds the Philippians that though Christ was God, he humbled himself to take on the nature of a slave. The reason he did that was so that he could save humanity from the slavery of sin. So his humility served to unify us with the Father. Humility would necessarily imply being accommodating and living in love. We are encouraged to persist in our effort towards becoming Christ personified in the society in which we live. In that way, we shall be on course in the pursuit of peace and harmony in our society. But that is not all. When we humble ourselves as Jesus did, God will exalt us as he exalted him. So we pray, Lord grant us the grace to empty ourselves of all pride and put on the garment of humility. Amen
