As humans, we often walk passed other members of our civilization and do not even bat an eye. Nowadays, we do not ask “How are you?” We do not say, “Nice weather we’re having, huh?” Well this is the story of what happened to Mark, an old homeless man, when someone finally gave him the time of day.
Mark often frequents Steem City National Park. His favorite spot to rest and sleep is the lone bench by the water. It sits under a large willow tree and provides a lot of shade. Mark sees tens, if not hundreds of people walk by every day. He doesn’t beg for money - he simply smiles and waves at those walk by. A majority of those who pass him quickly look away or at their phones to avoid him. He’s heard many negative comments but is bothered by nothing, as he has nothing. He has lost his family due to societal and psychological differences. He has lost his wife due to different economic standings. He hasn’t seen anyone from his family in 10 years. All Mark has is his park bench.
One day, a young lady named Linda started to visit Mark. Linda came by every single day at 1PM sharp during her lunch break. Mark couldn’t wait to see her. “A friend! I finally have someone to talk to!” Mark said to Linda. After weeks and weeks of mindless banter about politics, economics, and life in general, Mark and Linda truly became the best of friends. “You know, Mark, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you. I’ve got to go back to work though. Take care!” Linda said, joyfully. That was the last time Mark saw Linda.
One day went by. “Hey, maybe she’s sick today! I’ll see her tomorrow.”
One week went by. “You know, she probably went on vacation! No big deal.”
One month went by. Silence. Mark did not speak for two weeks. He did not smile or wave at anyone. He carved “Linda” in small letters on the back of his bench.
Another few weeks went by and Mark awoke to a letter on his lap. There was no one around him. Dazed, Mark quickly opens the letter. It reads:
“Mark. I’d like to thank you for truly showing me that even though one may be homeless, he can have a home in his heart to share with others. I was struggling with the deepest depression, and talking to you really helped me. My friends at work thought I was out eating with friends every day. Little did they know, I spent my 30 minute breaks with you.
Mark. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry for leaving without notice. I got a great job offer a few weeks ago in a different city a few hours away. I couldn’t bear to tell you. I sent a friend from work to deliver this letter to you. I typed it up and emailed it to her this morning. All I told her was to give it to the happy man on the bench…I hope she gave it to the right person!
Mark. Our last few months have been so memorable. I’m glad I got to experience some true friendship with a family member.
With love - Linda, your granddaughter.”
Mark looks up, tears in his eyes. He feels a light tap on his shoulder.
“Hi, Mark."
