There are many things we take for granted that means the world to the next person.
I just stepped out of a social media group where everyone was complaining about the bearish trend in the cryptocurrency market and I couldn't help but smile.
The smile came from the fact that I am typing this from a warm cosy room.
After spending some minutes watching heart-breaking stories of people left homeless in the one of the world's richest country, America.
The amazing thing is how these people are being treated by people who do not know how they got to be where they are.
One of the homeless person said someone poured cold water on the only blanket she had which she wrapped around herself in the night for warmt while she slept . Another had to give birth twice, while homeless, and had to have the babies taken away by the government.
One said she was homeless at a young age of 9 after having been given up for foster care at age 2
These are chilling true tales. It is easy to say those homeless people brought it upon themselves, as most of them are addicted to either drugs or alcohol.
This may be the only escape they can use to get out of the harsh reality of being treated like subhuman, and the apparent hopelessness they feel with the way people who are more privileged treat the homeless people who they believe are irresponsible people who brought their misfortune to themselves.
Amazingly, most of the homeless are happier than most of us with the little they get from passerby. We, on the other hand, have these insatiable desire to acquire more.
This is a sad reality and I really wish it's in my power to change this. The truth is the human mind is an amazing thing: it can adjust to infinite levels of discomfort, suffering and deprivation. The guy whose house is being foreclosed feels his world crumbling about him just like a presidential candidate who just lost election feels completely deflated. How about the nursing mother that just discovered that she has lost her husband and provider to a younger woman or the husband that just got fired?
No matter your level of discomfort, uncertainty and despair, you have much more capacity to accommodate more without breaking and there are millions of people around the world that are in much worse conditions than you. So you can help if you want, only if you want to.
How do you view the homeless you see around you? Do you offer them food or clothing? Or do you allow your problems over-weigh your empathy. Let me know in the comments.
Thanks for reading
