Ade after graduating from the university couldn’t secure a job. He submitted his applications every where he could think of, went to job fairs and networked but nothing happened. He further gave his CV to professions to work on but it seemed like the universe was against him. Despite graduating top of his class, he was never shortlisted for any recruitment process. All his friends got good paying jobs and some of his course mates who struggled to graduate went ahead and got jobs too.

He was told all sorts of things. Some said he wasn’t as good as he thought and others said he was cursed. Some went as far as telling him to give up but he didn’t deter. He was positive that the tide will eventually turn.

Eight months after unsuccessful job hut, he decided to start offering tutoring service to secondary school students. The income didn’t give him the life he wanted but it did put food on his table. He was mocked by some so called friends who taught his job was demeaning for a first class graduate. Two months later, the country went it recession, parents lost their jobs and Ade subsequently lost the few students he had. Off went his source of livelihood. With his ageing mother in the village to cater for, he was fast running out of options. Suddenly fate decided to smile on him and he got a mail from a recruitment agency inviting him for an aptitude test.

He was so elated that he studied all through the night and he also prayed like he had never. The morning of the test came and he got to the venue 30 mins before schedule. After the test, he was told to wait for a brief interview. Though the interview notice was sudden, he wasn’t nervous because he has spent a year preparing for this. After his interview he was very confident in his performance, and as he was about leaving, a member of the interview panel congratulated on a job well done. That was the confirmation he needed but alas! five days later, he was served a rejection mail.

"What could be wrong with me" he bemoaned to his mother as they sat together in their sparsely furnished room. The rejection mail almost pushed him to the edge so he decided to go spend some time with his mother and forget his woes. "my son" she said "the road to greatness is often times narrow but you have to persevere and work diligently in the little your hands find to do" Ade left the village feeling lighter, he was ready to go back to the city to try again.

He got back to the city and got a job as a cleaner in a bank, though he didn’t stop applying for better jobs. He was humble and courteous, treated customers with respect even when they were rude to him. He worked hard and smart and he always wore a smile on his face. One day, he was called into the general manager’s office. He was told he had gone through his CV because he was impressed with his working attitude. Since his qualification supersedes his current position, he thinks he’s better suited in the accounting department. He had seen him work diligently and that was all they needed to employ him so he was told to start work immediately.

That was the beginning of Ade’s success story. He didn’t give up in his pursuit for greatness. He went through life being diligent with the little it gave him while hoping for the best.

There is always a reward for diligence
